Prime Pantry -- why am I being charged for shipping?

One of my students volunteers at the food pantry at her church.  She asked my help raising money, so we held a pizza sale, and earned $68.  I had heard that Amazon Prime Pantry was cheap, so my students and I went online with the "wishlist" from the food pantry and took turns choosing things until the money was used up.

We specifically started by choosing 10 containers of baby food, that were listed as "buy 5 of these to get free shipping on your box".  I figured that way, even if we used 2 boxes we'd be OK.

Nope, it's still charging us shipping.  Now, obviously, I don't want to pay $11.98 of the food pantry's money for shipping, but I'm not sure if I'm just doing something wrong, or if I need to suck it up and go to the grocery store, which is a pain because I don't drive and the kids picked lots of heavy things!

Anyone know?

Also, how do they pick the items for prime pantry?  I swear it's the most random list of foods I've ever seen.  The pantry asked for sugar, so we wanted some simple 2 lb bags.  Nope, all they have is fancy organic sugar.  They also asked for canned tomatoes, but all they had was basil and garlic flavor.

Actually, if you go to "promotion details", it seems to say that the discount will be applied to the qualifying items proportionally, and shipping may be charged. Also, only $5.99 discount may be used per order. So, buying 10 items won't earn you free shipping for 2 boxes.

Last I checked, anything I would consider buying through Prime Pantry is considerably more expensive than buying locally, and that's before shipping.

Without the shipping, the prices are close enough that it would be cheaper than uber to pick it up.  The students did a very good job of making responsible choices, but the result is there are things like a 10 5 lb bags of flour in the order, which doesn't translate well to walking back from the grocery store, or even the bus stop.

I'm not getting anything off, though.  If shipping is $5.99 per box, then my $11.98 shipping cost doesn't reflect any discount whatsoever.

I think I'll call them, just out of principle.

If you have Amazon prime, and you waive the expedited shipping on one of your orders, you get a $5.99 gift certificate for Prime Pantry.  Which amounts to free shipping for one box.  So I've done that a couple of times, and I gave up.  There is never enough stuff I want from Prime Pantry to want the hassle of it.  I don't even look through the website anymore, it's a waste of time.

Me too. I only waive the expedited shipping now if I can get a buck credit towards digital media. That way if the DVR fails to record my show (etc. I can buy an episode at Amazon if need be. I do this enough during the year to make up for the cost of Prime membership...and still get expedited shipping when I do need it.

I think Prime Pantry might be more useful to folks living out in the boonies away from a lot of brick and mortar stores??? Hey, I wonder if Amazon honors the $5.99 shipping price to send a heavy box of items to Hawaii?

Try calling the local store and see if they would be willing to pull the order and drop it off at the food shelf. Explain the kids raised the money. You might want to give the local news organizations a call too. This is the kind of feel good story they love.
