SquirrellyMama
Appropriate for 13 year old boy? His Literacy teacher wants the kids to get permission to read it. I'm inclined to say no. This kid can barely read intense fiction. I can't imagine horrific abuse non-fiction will go well. Has anyone read it?
Janeway
No, I would not allow my child to read it. No way. Her story needs to be known, but many of the details are not appropriate for this age. Edited October 25, 2016 by Janeway
Janie Grace
I haven't but based on your description of him, I'd say absolutely not. Heck, my 13-year-old son is fine with intense fiction and there is no way I would want him reading a non-fiction account of kidnapping and rape. What in the world?! SquirrellyMama
My dh and I were both leaning towards no. I thought I'd ask just in case :) No it will be. I am glad she told them to get permission. It seems like most of what this teacher makes them read includes drug abuse, rape, suicide, mental illness with suicide, drug addicted babies, etc... I'm not against these topics, but I'd love to see other less heavy topics thrown in.

I guess it's public school?
MercyA
I read it, and I would say no, absolutely not.
ashfern
I read it and would also say no. She doesn't go into detail but it's enough that I wouldn't want a younger teen reading it.

Why must there be such focus on the dark side???
G5052
Nope. Mine are older, and I still wouldn't agree.
mamiof5
I didn't know there was a book. No, no way. So glad teacher asked.
SKL
I haven't read the book, but a book about child rape etc. isn't appropriate for a 13yo boy IMO. Is he young for his literature class? It seems an odd selection for that age.

DesertBlossom
I have read her book. And no, I wouldn't let a 13yo read it.
Katy
If you're wavering, you can probably check the book out from the library and see it for yourself. I'd be more inclined to read through something sensitive together, with plenty of discussion, than to let him do it at school.
