AMC 10 Problem Series (Aops school) - credits?

Recommended Posts

How many credits would you give to AMC 10 Problem Series? This is via the AoPs online school.

Classes meet Oct 24-Jan 30 (so about 3 months give or take), 1x a week, 1-1/2 hour classtime.

We tried the Intro to NT Aops course last week, but dropped it. The course seemed remedial to my son and since AoPs users said the Intermediate level was a huge step up, we tried Intro first. This course met Oct 19-Jan 25 (same timeframe), also 1x a week, 1-1/2 hour classtime, and users suggested a 1/2 credit...

Just thinking of maybe trying this as we plan to do AMC in the winter/spring... THANKS!!!  :grouphug:

(It's actually wait-listed right now - but just curious in case a spot opens up!)

I gave 1/2 credit for that class.

Really?  I figured that since it was just challenge problems (i.e., no Alcumus or writing problem component) and there was no grade option available that it wasn't sufficient.  Did any schools/entities question that?  (I'm not trying to be argumentative, Kathy.  I am new to the whole "granting credit" notion, and I'm trying to find a balance between excessive rigor and excessive flexibility.  It feels like I wander back and forth between the two extremes. :o )

Sure it's OK to ask! No colleges questioned it (& the kids did very well in admissions). I checked that they were keeping up and practicing for the AMCs & and that they put in enough hours for a typical 1/2 credit. In addition, they took the AMC 10 (or another if a different AoPS course) and made honor roll or up. So I felt more than OK with the credit. Hope that helps!

Okay. One more question:  What about the MathCounts Basic class?  Would that be high school credit-worthy (considering the outcome), or is that solidly middle school?

Thank you, Kathy.  I really appreciate your help.  I need to sort out the credits rather early, because our state has a program in which high school students have access to funding for dual credit classes once they've earned a sufficient number of high school credits.

I just want to add that I don't think that there's one absolutely right (or wrong) way here.

You can see by reading the boards that everybody has slightly different ways of writing transcripts, granting credits, etc. I did give credit for the AoPS problem-solving courses, but I didn't give credit for the kids' math team activities. They were extracurriculars instead.  Summer math camps weren't given credits, but they were listed on their transcripts (with a NC=no credit symbol).

The important things to look for when producing homeschool documents are clarity and consistency. Our job as homeschool parents in the college admissions process is to make our kids' educations as clear and easy to understand as possible. Whether or not our students are accepted somewhere depends on their accomplishments and attributes after all, not ours.

I changed my transcript forms between my son's and my daughter's applications. One had awards and major extracurriculars listed on the transcript; the other did not. One had some homeschool classes listed as honors level; the other did not. One was 2 pages long; the other was a single page. One had more extensive course descriptions than the other. And so on. Didn't seem to make a difference!

Your state's dual enrollment program sounds like a great opportunity. Good luck!

Dd took the MC/ AMC8 class in middle school. I think that there was only one level back then (instead of basic & advanced). I did not grant credit nor did I include it on her high school transcript.

My kids also took this in middle school and won't go on our transcript.  However, if your student takes it in high school, it seems a shame to not include it.  The thing is, MC/AMC8 are considered middle school competitions, but a high school student should be able to get credit for at the very least as a math elective.  I think problem solving practice is very important, and your student should be taking the class that is appropriate for his experience and forget about labels about whether it's supposed to be middle school or high school.

Thank you, daijobu; you make excellent points.  She took it in middle school, so I think I'll give it a pass.  She was thrilled yesterday when I told her I was reconsidering credit for the AMC class she's in now, though.  (Of course now I'm looking at her credit load and going  .  But that's a lament for another day....)

Wait, are you guys saying that DS can count WOOT as a class?  I had no idea. He will take it 3 times in high school as the content rotates, can I count it 3 times?

Don't ask me, sister!  I'm just a rookie.  I plan on putting the AMC class on the transcript with a note saying "Because Kathy in Richmond said.  So there."
