Edhesive AP Computer Science

Recommended Posts

Any reviews or experiences you can share? Were they well prepared for the AP exam? Ds (10h grade) is computer savvy and has done a little bit of programming. So is it too late to join now and comfortably finish in time for AP? Or should we save it for next year (11th grade). Thanks!

My ds did Edhesive. I felt he was well prepared.  He got a 4, and his 2 friends got 5s.  I was pleased with the 4.

The way it works is that each week the next weeks lessons are released (in your case, you would have access to all the weeks that have already been released).  The student works from a dashboard, working through the weeks lessons. The deadlines are "soft" meaning they aren't really deadlines, just keep you on track dates.  Your student would need to set a faster pace.

There is usually a video lesson and computer graded activities each week. Every other week there is a bigger project.  There are regular quizzes and tests which are also computer graded.  The projects you can redo as many times as you want until you get the grade you want.

If you have trouble with one of the weekly activities there is a forum you can post on.  Other students give suggestions and a TA always answers.  For the bigger projects there is a special forum where you privately e-mail back and forth with a TA if you are having trouble.

We were pleased with the support.  In the first month ds would ask his friend for help, but he got better and better with working with the TAs to figure out what he needed.

My ds is not super at breaking down a problem into details or (at least last year) buckling down and studying areas where he is weak.  He learned so much perseverance in the class and he loved it even though, for him, it took a huge amount of time (bc of the big projects---he would get overwhelmed and stuck, but then would work and work bc he was determined to get 100-which was jaw breaking for me to see, as he'd always been a skirt through with the minimum expected kind of kid).

If he had buckled down and studied harder in his weak areas I really think he would have gotten a 5.  The last month was review for the exam, complete with live webinars, and practice exams. We had a Barrons study book which ds found overwhelming and didn't use. He said the Edhesive prep much more closely represented the actual exam.

Thanks for all the details. How much time did he have to put in a week? Because if I t'll be time consuming, I think I'll wait until next year.

That was the hardest, part.  It wasn't consistent for him.  Some weeks were like 3-5 (closer to 5).  But if he hit a project that gave him trouble--wham it could literally take up to 15 and it was hard to predict when that was going to happen.  Your child may not have this problem at all.  His friends did not. They had more programming experience, though.

We just started AP Comp Sci also - just last week! We originally intended to do Intro this year, but then my 9th grade ds said he wanted to do AP. So we switched. He's loving it so far and being 8 weeks behind, he's really able to speed through it, at his own pace, and I have no doubt he'll be able to catch up in no time. I can't say more than that as we've only just begun - but he's really enjoying it. And as programming/math is his thing (even though he's never had a formal programming course, just DIY codeacademy) it's coming fairly naturally to him. Much more so than his other AP.... LOL!

So if you sign up, let me know - and we can be in it together this year. I haven't yet figured out all the bells and whistles on what I get via the Homeschool package for $150 (we chose to do that as I figure $150 is a steal compared to what an AP course we were looking at for next year). They were helpful via email support as to how it works, but I haven't taken the time yet. Suffice to say, my son finds it easy to be independent with. :D

Very helpful review Freesia! Did you do the homeschool package or just the free version? Just curious as to your experience...

I did what is now the homeschool version. It was called coaching last year. I found it helpful bc I got extra copies of tests and quizzes which I used as practice/pre-tests.  I also had access to the coaches forum which I didn't really post to. There was a useful section on grading.  They are very much about you are the teacher/decision maker.  Adjust the schedule to your school, grade according to your school guidelines.  There are multiple chances on quizzes and, I think tests, from the coaches account you can see the attempts. The first grade is what you see on the running grade, but they say you can take the average of attempts if you like, drop grades if you like--really what works for your school.  It drove some teachers crazy though, bc there was no way to adjust that in the shown grade.  You had to keep your own grade book if you decided to do something different. They are planning to make it adjustable, but it didn't seem like that would happen this year.

I think itshould be fine. I recall someone joined in January 2 years ago and still finished in time to take the AP. it depends on how hard your student is willing to work but it is doable.

Yes, that was my dd.  She did have a strong background in python.  We had spent the first few months of the school year trying to learn Java independently and pretty much doing a bad job.  So we switched midstream to Mrs. Dovi and she did the rest.  Dd ended up with a 5, and now I have my dd#2 taking the class too.

I am very interested in this for my son, so I registered at the site but now I have some questions.  Is this free? Or is there a cost for it?  We registered and clicked the email link to confirm the account but now the site wants a token.  How do I get that?  I did find the first four modules open under the course demo page.  Is that what your students are using?  I also found a link that I could use to purchase a student license for $150.  Is that what I am looking for?  Help, please.

I also had really good customer service interactions with them, including some detailed phone calls for a couple issues.

My understanding is that they are going to keep it free for students, including independent students who do not have a school section. They get the videos and can do the programming and quizzes, but don't have access to anything in the coaches packet (like additional quiz material or solutions for the programs)

They do charge for access to coaching material.  This is typically purchased by a school, but could also be done by a mentor who is coaching a small group or individual.  The Homeschool option is new since ds did AP CS.  This seems like it is the same as the coaches option I used, but specifically for a single student.

When I click on sign up now, it asks if the student has a token or is signing up independently.  My guess is that if you purchased the homeschool option, there should be an email with token info or token info is within the coach login.

If your kid is doing the course without coach support (ie, just using the student side and forums for assistance), then probably the independent option is what you're looking for.

But again, their customer support was very very good.  Reach out to them.

I did email them yesterday and figure that I will hear from them tomorrow.  The four modules that I found under demo seem to be complete and all the other modules are there as well just not available yet.  Looking at the course syllabus and schedule the only thing that seems to be missing are the quizzes and the lab assignments.  Maybe you have to purchase the homeschool option to get those now.

This is an old thread - sorry.  So, you could do this course for free?  My DH is a software engineer so he could provide help and feedback, but it would be nice to have a full course all ready to use.

They are very receptive to questions. I would drop them a note. I had several detailed phone calls with them on various issues.

They now have a homeschool specific sign up. I don't known how that has changed the available options.

The independent learner option is free.

My kids did the paid student option as they won't be happy with logging into their accounts for me to check their progress. With the student option, I get to see their progress and grades/scores using my teacher account while they get to be as good as self-study.
