Squirrels in the attic rolling their nuts around

We live between peach and walnut orchards and there are squirrels in the attic, rummaging around at night, driving dh around the bend. :)

Any not-so-violent solutions you have tried and worked?

We have a live trap but have no clue how big of a family moved in.

Our pest control company has a wildlife service. They find the entry places, fix them, and guarantee the work with annual checks. If you have any HVAC equipment or other stuff with wires up there, I'd get the critters out expeditiously. They can do $$$ damage quickly.

Squirrels aren't that active at night. Could it be raccoons?

So dh climbed up there crawled all over the place and found nary a rodent dropping. What the heck is it then?

We had two openings under the eaves where bird nests were. We covered them up with one-way doors. Wonder if we are going to hear anything tonight.

I expected it to be either squirrels or rats but rats typically leave quite a trail of droppings. Dh found nothing, except some feathers - as in bird feathers...would a bird move in tap around on the beams?

How about wood peckers? We had one that would wake us every morning by thrashing it's beak on a old satellite dish on our roof. They can be nuisance.
