Stick with the known or time for something different

I know a lot of people love R&S LA - we've used CLE LA and my children have really enjoyed it.

However, I'm having curriculum indecision. I'm wondering if it would be worth trying R&S or if we should just stick with what I know, firsthand, works for my children.

Is CLE working? Are they advancing? Understanding? Getting good grades overall? Is it easy to implement? Easy for you to grade and teach? Is there something about it just not working out for you?

What's pulling you toward R&S? They are textbooks, which means you'll have to complete it orally or they'll have to write out answers on paper. They probably won't do *that* much more writing than they would in a workbook though. They don't have to be replaced for younger siblings. Spelling isn't included, but their separate spelling course is solid and easy to use.

The grass isn't really greener on the other side of the fence. I wouldn't fix something that isn't broken. If you're unhappy with CLE, R&S may be a good option though.

R and S is more of a mastery program. It doesn't loop back within each book and review what has been covered (although it does cover, for example, adverbs, each year).

My DD and I like CLE because that "We Remember " section has really helped her review the trouble areas daily and she seems to be retaining more. (We switched from R and S to CLE in the 4th grade book).

Actually, R&S does loop back and review old concepts.  :001_smile:  Nearly all lessons have a review section that covers old concepts as the last exercise set. Yes, the majority of the work for adverbs is in the mastery style adverb chapter, but adverbs will be spiraled through the review sections after the adverb chapter.

It is working and they love it. I tend to worry that there's always something better, with everything we use.

They understand it, they both really enjoy it, and it's very easy for us to implement in our day (I have them do a lesson a day).

I like the idea of R&S based on what I've read about it along with my desire to have fewer workbooks in the house.

I have not heard that CLE is lacking in any way, so if y'all are happy with it, then stick to it.

I'm more of a Writing Strands/Easy Grammar kind of gal, but for those who prefer more school-like materials, I recommend R&S's English. I think the fact that it is a textbook instead of a workbook is a plus, because I think having to do so much writing on actual paper is a good thing. BUT....if y'all like CLE, then stick with it.

Don't switch.

We went from R&S English *TO* CLE Language, and have absolutely loved the switch. CLE LA is an excellent way to review concepts learned and help kids retain it, while keeping those lessons manageable and easy to implement. I agree with the others....if it ain't broke, don't fix it! ;)

Agreeing with the others that it's absurd to change something that's WORKING.  Grammar is typically a subject that is detested, and changing from a workbook approach to a boring, Amish, book where they'd have to write everything might frustrate the tar out of your kids.

The only thing you said was you don't like the mess of the CLE workbooks all over.  Get more totes and more organization.  That's what you really need, not new curriculum.  You change what's NOT working, not what is.
