abrightmom
Can this be done without a teacher? Can the student do this independently by reading the text and working in the book?
KeriJ
Yes. We tried it earlier this year. It was fine overall, but eventually DD found it dry and vocab. heavy. But we had done a lot of HOD/CM type science until then. ymmv But, yes, it can be done independently.

hermione310
We're using BJU Science 6 through the DLO. The videos reinforce the book reading and in my opinion are extremely well done (they reinforce study skills and appropriate review before tests as well as the concepts themselves). I've been very impressed. DD just did a lesson on atoms and the periodic table today independently and it went quite well.
Caia
I think it would be way more interesting for the student to do BJU 6th grade science by watching the distance learning videos. There are two teachers that teach 6th grade science and both are very knowledgeable and engaging. The DVDs (or online) are not extremely cheap, but I believe a student would definitely get more out of the class than trying to do it on their own. The good news if that route interests you is that there is normally a sale during December (if you can wait that long) which brings the cost for the DLO down significantly.
Loesje22000
Dd had used BJU Sciense during grade 2-7. She did grade 6 mostly independently. But she is a very textbookish girl
Mrs Twain
BJU 6 with the videos is one of the best science courses my kids have ever done. I think it would have been quite dull without the videos, though.
mom31257
I used it with the videos, but our co-op is using this year with our 6th/7th graders. The kids do all the chapter work at home and labs at co-op. Our families are loving it, and none are using any DVD or streaming. We try to invest in at least one BJU dvd course every other year. That was a great choice. Ds is doing BJU 7th Life Science this year in 8th grade. It is fabulous!
Another Lynn
We've tried BJU science twice - 6th grade with videos and 7th grade without. In our experience, the videos were too time consuming; we quickly dropped it. The 7th grade life science is tedious and info-overload. It definitely approaches high school level, imho. I know plenty of folks have a great experience with BJU science and love it, but just wanted to mention another perspective.
ScoutTN
Can any of you who have used the video element speak to the differences between the online version and the DVDs? I know that the online is recorded, not live.

I know that the online is recorded, not live. The video is the same content. One difference is the testing. When you order DVD, you receive paper tests and answer keys. With online streaming, the tests are online. Another is that the online version gives you an abridged version of the teacher's edition online in pdf format. The DVD version sends you important TM pages in print form. Both formats send you important student hand outs printed. I prefer the DVD because of traveling and taking school with us.

ScoutTN
Am I understanding correctly that the DVDs are essentially a rental and have to be returned at the end of the year?
Peaceful Isle
The video has the information the teacher manual would have. Last year my dd took BJU science 6 course, and she loved it. Many things she learned, were not in the student textbook, but from the teacher on the video. If you have the money, go for the video. If you have the extra time, you could teach her from the teacher guide.

Heidi
I hardly read negative comments about BJU science and the videos, which is why I got Life science for my 7th grade this year. She hates it and so do I! It is so time consuming and she says the video teacher is boring. But we are doing it because I spent so much money on it. She loved the apologia elementary series with the notebook journals. I wish I had saved BJU for high school.
Loesje22000
@ BJU Lifescience and further It is a hard text, but as we have a different system here, I was able to spread it about grade 7+ 8. Nevertheless she got Stucked with BJU physical science, So we switched.
redquilthorse
It can be done independently but you will need to keep an eye out to be sure your student is completing the work and actually doing the review assignments before the test. My 6th grader wasn't staying on track and I didn't realize it for a couple of weeks until he failed a test. (If that happens you can clear the test and have the student retake it, btw.) So you're mostly an administrator.
