I hope the "open cardigan" fad leaves quickly.

I think that look has been around for as long as there have been cardigans. As others said, it elongates the torso, and keeps your arms warm.

If you ever watch Seventh Heaven, the mom character ALWAYS wears an open shirt or sweater (usually button down shirt) over another shirt. As in, maybe 3 episodes she didn't. It is very flattering.

I like the open look but it's a shame that these days it's near impossible to find a traditional one, for the buttoners among us.

Kinda like looking for simple dresses, or garments with sleeves. Hard to just walk into a clothing store and find those things.

That is an issue.  On occasion I am cold and I want the button option.

team open here (because I wear them with dresses) but Jcrew has the Jackie series which comes in all the colors. It's meant to be fitted but I have buttoned these before (with jeans). Issue is, unless you get the cashmere or wool blends, these are not exactly warm-warm.

But to me the whole point of a sweater is to stay warm, and leaving my front exposed only lets in the cold air!  I can barely find any traditional warm button down sweaters anymore...

Why not just wear a sweater without buttons? :)

I never button cardigans.

This allows me to rant about the cheap quality of everything.  My favorite cardigans are almost 20 years old.  My newer ones have not held up as well.

I get it when the temp is just slightly cool.  But here it gets so cold, and I'm really just looking for thick, uber-warm sweaters (but still cute).  I can't seem to find styles I like that have buttons!  I just don't understand the point of a sweater that's supposed to be super warm that doesn't button.

Lands End has them in every color.

Non traditional with a button option :) http://m.shop.nordstrom.com/s/bobeau-one-button-fleece-wrap-cardigan-regular-petite/3113609

But those are thinner ones. I'm looking for thick, chunky ones, where it gets 20 below 0.

Yikes! If it got 20 below here, it would be End Times. :) (We do rarely have negative temps like that including windchill, but they cance school and tell everyone to stay inside. )

Do you sew?

Huh.  I sometimes wear them open, and sometimes buttoned, depending on my mood and the temperature.

I didn't notice the open cardigan fad.   All the sweaters I've seen have buttons.

Next time you walk into a department store, you'll surely notice them everywhere!

Well I haven't sewn a clothing item for probably 25 years...  :)

Yes, that's actually the one place I'm finding one at right now.  It's not perfect (style-wise), but it does look thick and it buttons!

I haven't looked at their selection this year, but I knew they'd had some in the past.  And I've been pleased with the quality of the items I've ordered from them.  Hope you like it!

I don't understand why you wouldn't just do pullovers. They're warmer and go up higher, though you can find V-necks pretty easily if you want a little neck. You can still get a layered look with pullovers, but they're warmer. Cardigans are pretty much meant to be able to be open. Otherwise, what's the point?

I do get frustrated that one style will dominate in any type of clothing... I have a couple of chunkier older cardigans (which I also wear open much of the time). It's true they're harder to come by now.

Basically, I think the real complaint is lack of thick cardigans, not that most people (and I refuse to believe it's a trend because everyone has always worn them that way) leave them open.

There are like 3 weeks when I can wear open cardigans around here. After that little window, BOOM! It's way too cold for me to be comfortable wearing them, mainly because they're thin and not really meant for cold weather, ime, and I'm a cold weather WIMP!

I do so LOVE those 3 weeks, though! :001_tt1:

If I want warmth, I wear a pull over or a zip front sweater/fleece.  If I want flexibility, I wear a cardigan.  I rarely wear them buttoned because I am too fat in the middle.  An open cardigan hides that roll.  I did find a heavy cable knit cardigan at Lands End a few years ago.  But chunky sweaters don't really seem to be that "in."  Oh, and if I wanted warmth with a cardigan, I would wear a shirt underneath that was warmer.  I have a couple of heat gear crew neck shirts that I bought at costco.  They are really warm under a lighter sweater.

I admit I have never given it much thought.

I suppose a cardigan would be more stylish than my typical hoodie. But the advantage of a hoodie is you can use the sleeve to wipe off a white board and not worry about it showing. :p

This is what my DH wears almost exclusively. I'm more buttoned* up as I get older, whereas he is going the other way.

*heh

I've never liked having to pull tight sweaters over my head.  My hair goes wild every time I do that.  :)  Cardigans are so much simpler!

Land's End still has some.

I wear quite a few layers under it. We have a fairly warm winter here (no snow - only sometimes below freezing) and the layer option is great for this kind of weather.

If it's super-duper cold I wear hoodies, fleece pull-overs, or pull over sweaters.  I LOVE my cardigans.  I have a bunch of really thick, shawl collar-type long ones that don't have any buttons at all, so definitely meant to be worn open.   If I get chilled for a minute, I just pull the sides over each other and snuggle into it.  Most of mine are from Target.

They'll be around so long as the style is for skinny jeans/pants. Women wear them to cover their hips & backsides since the cardigans I've seen typically are mid-thigh to knee-length. Frankly, I'd rather see the skinny bottoms trend die and a style that is far more flattering for women with curvy hips come back.

The thing is, the sweaters that are good quality will be uber expensive. The problem is though, that paying a lot won

't guarantee a quality garment. It

's frustrating. The garment can cost the same, but one will last for ever and the other will look raggedy quickly.

Huh.  I never thought about the flattering angle.  Usually when I put one on I am slightly chilly.  Not chilly enough to actually go change out of a sundress, but chilly enough that I want my arms covered.

Sometimes I put one on because I'm wearing a comfy leisure bra with visible colored straps that you can see around my tank top and I don't want to show my straps to whoever is knocking on the door.

I think the somewhat weirder style are puffy jackets that have no sleeves.  I own one, but I'm not exactly sure why because functionally speaking it's kinda stupid.  LOL

My dd has one. She wears it tons in the winter. She hates coats. She hates being constricted and would rather have chilly arms. Hers is down filled.

These make good sense if you're in a ski area.  One where it snows almost every night but melts almost every day.  If it's 35 degrees (F), not windy, and sunny, layering a flannel under a wool sweater with a down vest on top is perfect - you're not too hot or too cold indoors or out.  When I lived in NY I saw this a lot up in the Adirondacks.  I also saw this a lot around Denver.  I suspect most areas of the country have the wrong sort of climate for this to be ideal though.
