QuirkyKapers
We officially found out my teenager has dyslexia and dysgraphia. So, I signed up and got approved for Learning Ally. Alas, I didn't realize their books don't work on the Kindle Fire. For whatever reason, it doesn't work on my daughters ipod very well. Takes a long time to download the books and then when hearing the book, it starts and stops. I guess I should have gone with getting books on Amazon that used Kindle. I didn't realize that you could play the audible books you purchased through Amazon without signing up for audible. (At leas that is what Amazon said). What do others use for audio books? Thanks! zarabellesmom
My local library has audio books that we can download online. I think many do. I don't know if they work on the kindle, but we have no trouble at all playing them on ipod or iphone. They go through the Overdrive App.
PeterPan
You can take your documentation to your ped and get him to sign your application for National Library Service. They will send you a really nice ereader unit. It's not slim like the kindle, but you can put files on thumb drive, insert, and play. The speaker is good and the price is right (free). The NLS book options are AMAZING. And free. I'm not sure why LA books aren't working on your kindle fire. Did you try rebooting it? Does LA use an app? Are you sure you're using the right format? I like audible, but you're going to spend a fortune. Definitely pursue NLS/BARD. Also your local library will have ebooks to borrow online. Go to the library with your device and ask how. :)
prairiewindmomma
We had a NLS player for a few years, and we've switched to using an iPad mini. The iPad also allows my ds to use Siri to do a number of things.
PeterPan
Well sure, just about anything (kindle fire, tablet, ipad, iphone, etc.) would be better, lol. The price is right. And actually, the carrying handle is really nice and the speakers that can fill a room are nice. And my ds has now trashed 2 kindles, meaning I'm in-between devices. I'm scared to go ipad with him, because I'm not honestly sure it can survive him. A kindle is so much cheaper, and this time we'll probably by new and do a warranty. The previous models I bought were used to save money. One got dunked and one just had this terrible, unfortunate fall. But yeah, totally agree, when there's the budget tablets are better. :) Edited October 13, 2016 by OhElizabeth
QuirkyKapers
I had contacted LA and asked about the Kindle. They said it isn't compatible. I tried really hard to make it work though ;) I just don't want to spend the $$ on an ipad...
PeterPan
Look at NLS/BARD. You print their form, take it to your ped (along with your documentation) and he signs. Bam done, in 2 weeks you have a free player AND the BARD app to use on your kindle. NLS has amazing holdings. You don't need LA possibly. Also, your public library has ebooks you can download online and use on your kindle for free. If you take the device to the library, they can show you how.
