Duke TIP/CTY

Duke TIP, CTY JHU and CTD NUMATS were happy to take DS11's ACT without essay and SAT without essay scores for awards. He qualified for SET, which does not require essay scores.

My kids are the over represented minority (asian) and we are also not poor enough so I did not look at the CTY scholarships requirements.

Duke would not take DS11's scores until July this year when he is officially a 7th grader  CTD start from 6th for ACT and SAT and gave my kid his medals for the SAT scores since we register for SAT through them. CTY start from 7th but is willing to accept scores and give the awards.

ETA:

My kids didn't test through Duke TIP and I doubt my DS11 would want to take SAT or ACT again as a 7th grader just to hope to get the highest composite score for the scholarship award.

DD did both with writing. On the old SAT, where the writing was first, I think it contributed to her scores being a little lower than on the ACT, where the writing was last.

If you're considering DE or college classes early not through DE, check and see if the writing helps there. Our local CC allows taking some of the more interesting Humanities classes without having to take the General English comp first if you have a good ACT Essay. I also think that just having the score may have helped open some doors, although her essay was in the same general range as her other subtests. It was kind of "oh, this kid is SERIOUS!!".

I hadn't considered that colleges might want those scores for DE. I'll have to check out their requirements.

I have only looked at DE for maths and sciences, my nearest CC takes ACT math scores but the CCs that are a direct bus ride away insist on placement tests or AP Calculus score. My local CC and state universities put their requirements in the course catalogs so it was easy to find the information. They might waive on a case by case basis but we aren't applying for DE yet so I didn't ask.

The digital photography class at CC that my kids want to take has no prerequisites.
