Is SOTW AG useful for older kids?

I'm going to be using SOTW 1 in conjunction with SL Core 6 and Oak Meadow ancients. I'm contemplating SOTW AG, as I would like the narration prompt questions (DS is 11.5, but delayed due to raging ADHD and LD's) and I figure the mapping would be useful.

We would not be doing the crafts, DS hates that sort of thing, and OM already provides hands-on ideas. No coloring pages either.

So, is the AG worth it if you are not doing hands-on or coloring? I know there are book lists, but I also own All Through the Ages, so I have book ideas there.

I think the book ideas go beyond History through the Ages, especially for picture and younger books. The question and example narrations are excellent. We don't do many of the coloring pictures, because at 14 my ds is beyond that, actually he was never into coloring. We do a lot of the craft and since you would not be doing those you will not get as much use out of the book as dome people do. In addition to craft their are also games and acting out the story exercises you might be able to use.

(We're in SOTW-1, with 5th grader and 3rd grader.)

In the AG, all we use are the review/discussion questions, narration prompts, and timeline illustrations (dd8 colors, cuts and pastes them on index cards). We don't use the additional book lists or do the hands-on activities.

The AG is totally worth it to me, because I don't know what a narration should look like or how to get a student to do one. It lays out all the baby steps to narration that I need. I've yet to come across any other product (other than SOTW and FLL series) that does this; other curricula usually just tell the teacher, "Have the student do a narration," assuming the teacher knows what it looks like and how it's done.

Our main purposes in going through SOTW-1 are to learn how to do narrations and to kind of wrap-up the ancient world history we've studied in prior years (incl. filling in some gaps); it's working really well. So, how worthwhile it will be for you will depend on your goals.

HTH!

Honestly, I use the maps because they're in there; and since we also outline using KIHW - and those pages are noted in there, I sprang for the AG this year. But, if you have SL, you will get narration blurbs in the IG - and their maps. (And, there *are* maps at the beginning of the SOTW chapters, and SL will have you study the maps in the UILE as well.)

So, I wouldn't get the AG if I were you.

I wouldn't spend all of the money on the AG if you are just going to use it for the mapwork. I would just purchase the Blackline Maps of World History: The Complete Set 5000BC-The Present by Knowledge Quest. Is $29.95 and can be used for all 4 history cycles.

You may even find a cheaper price at Rainbow Resource, if they carry it.

I forget how much I paid for just one year of their maps - but - wow! (Their lesson plans are more advanced than what you'll get elsewhere.)

I totally agree - and am making plans to get this for next year myself.

Thanks, Beth!

We are going through it now with 9yo ds. I got the older version pretty inexpensively so it was a good chance to check it out. I do use the review questions and mapping because it is what I have but I do think it is a bit too easy for him. I am talking about SOTW1. I absolutely love the book but probably wouldn't us the AG for a child this old. The mapping is too easy imo and the most of the suggested books are geared toward younger children.
