StaceyinLA
Dgs (K) is doing R&S first grade math and it's a bit dull. He isn't really complaining, but I'd like to help dd liven it up a little so he doesn't start to think math is awful. Any suggestions? mom2bee
Is she using the curriculum fully/as written? What sort of time commitment are they looking to make? I think Rod and Staff has a Teachers Manual for the first few levels and the TM isn't 'extra' it's meant to be an equal part of the program. Are they going through the program as written or doing their own thing?
StaceyinLA
She's kinda just been doing the workbook, but she does have the TM and I'm going to mention to her that she really needs to read it and do what's in it!
mmasc
I agree that just doing the workbook would seem boring. But if the TM is used, it's much more interactive and fun. I think at that level you use a felt frog pond maybe? Also, your DD could add her own manipulatives just to add some hands-on fun.

Yes, she really needs to do the oral class time. That's where the actual teaching takes place. The workbook only reinforces what was taught (sometimes, what was taught several lessons before it appears in the seat work). The first three years of math are dependent on the oral class time. From fourth grade on, everything the children need to know is in their textbooks.
