Update on Barton, etc. with my 11 yr old

Thanks again for the encouragement to go with Barton; DS is doing really well! He was able to start in Level 2, and while we aren't going fast, we finished lesson 2 yesterday and he is just doing really well with it.

I thought I would have to really explain marking the phrases, but he understood it almost instinctively, which surprised me.

He is doing better socially in his other classes, too (he attends a home school enrichment once/week, and does his history and science there, with homework at home). His teachers, who last year told me he wasn't talking to them, to others, etc, this year report he is speaking up in class, answering questions, talking to kids, etc. These are big things for him, so I am thrilled with that.

His speech is understandable a lot more of the time, now; mostly he only lapses into bad habits when he is excited, then he gets going too fast and that is when he becomes hard to understand. But, the very fact he was telling his teacher a story, and got excited and animated about it, is a huge improvement in & of itself, so that is really cool.

Overall, he is doing really well. Well enough that DH is no longer balking over the price tag for Barton, lol!

FWIW, Level 3 has a lot of meat to it.  It will take longer to get through.  Don't rush.  Make sure going into Level 4 that he is SOLID on everything prior, including and especially Level 3.  Level 4 can be incredibly challenging (frequently the hardest of the levels for many kids).

Also, try not to take much time off from Barton.  It is easy for things to get forgotten without a lot of long term exposure and review, especially for kids with dyslexia.  If you both need a break or you are waiting for a level to arrive, maybe look at purchasing the Spelling Success card games.  Great for review and keeping things fresh.  Imagine.more also has a website where she posts about ways to make your own games.  She posts here and is very helpful.

And once again,  :hurray:  :hurray:  :hurray:  for things going so well.  Yeah!

We are definitely not rushing. We are going slowly, a little bit every day. We work 20 to 30 mins a day, depending on his stamina that day. Sometimes that means we get through three steps in a lesson, sometimes one step. Yesterday, for example, we only did the marking phrases and reading nonsense words. Today we will do the extra practice, and then maybe start lesson 3, maybe save that for tomorrow, depending how he is doing. We have a few weeks to go before LEVEL 3, and we will just take our time and get there when he is ready.

We do take weekends off, and we skipped when he was sick with bronchitis last week, but otherwise we don't take breaks so far. We may have a week or so off between Levels, to give me time to watch the videos and all, but otherwise we don't plan to take breaks. Thanks, though! I have heard Level 4 is a bear, so I am definitely making sure we have a very solid foundation before we move forward. I am just so thrilled it is working, and he's getting it, and not balking too much over the details of each step, etc.

If you get to a point where you feel like you need review in book 3, remember Susan has links to printable flash cards. I have mine laminated and sometimes set them out at the beginning of the lesson.

Just wait till you see the jump in ability in level 4!!!
