madteaparty
A quick search of my Amazon prime options reveals they're all R rated. I'm wondering if there's a PG 13 version or alternatively tell me that one of the R versions is not that bad :) We have seen a live production "teen" version, looking for something to watch on TV with my 12 yr old. Thanks!

Just so that you know: I watched these BBC Shakespeares as a teenager and they were good at the time, but they may well have production values that a present-day young person would find risible. You should also be aware that Othello is played by a (very good) white actor made up to look black. With race at the heart of the play, this would be an odd introduction to the piece.

I'm going to pre-watch the Kenneth Branagh one.
Bluegoat
Yes I didn't consider that one for that reason. I'm going to pre-watch the Kenneth Branagh one. I don't remember there being anything wildly inappropriate in that version, though it's been a long time. I remember seeing it in the theatre at the same time and thought it was similar in terms of content, and my sister who was in elementary school had no problem with it. Perhaps the domestic violence aspect might in itself give an R rating. I wouldn't worry too much about using a made-up actor for the role of Othello, I think it's easy enough to talk about with any student old enough to see it. Bluegoat
It might be worthwhile to look at the one with Carlo Rota as well. I only saw part of it, and it wasn't totally brilliant, but it did have the advantage of being done rather like a play rather than a film. Incognito
Our library has a number of the disks from the Animated Tales version. We didn't watch Othello, but many others. They are about 30 minutes long, IIRC. Summaries intermingled with original language, IIRC. It's an introductory version, but I highly recommend them.
