kentuckymom Posted September 25, 2016 Share Posted September 25, 2016 This thread is really all about me bragging that my daughter finally decided on a Halloween costume (yes, it's still over a month away but we're going to the Halloween party at Legoland in a week) and I put it together quickly and fairly cheaply, mostly with stuff that can be reused as regular clothing. However, I love hearing about Halloween costumes, so please chime in with your costume successes, or chime in with your problems and maybe someone else will have a great suggestion. Last night we needed a quick dinner between Ultimate Frisbee practice and attending a ballet downtown, so we stopped at a McDonalds on the way. I don't really like the food, but I'm so glad we stopped there because the Happy Meal prized inspired this costume. Kittygirl got a Supergirl headband and said, "Maybe I should be Supergirl for Halloween." She wore the headband into the theater for the ballet, and our seats happened to be near a woman who is one of the teacher aides from her former preschool. She complimented the headband and Kittygirl said, "Thanks! I'm going to be Supergirl for Halloween." Now, this girl has gone back and forth on costumes for months, so I was so excited to hear a firm decision from her, quite out of the blue. This morning we went shopping and pulled together the rest of the Supergirl costume with the help of a consignment store and Target. It includes a red skirt with attached shorts, a blue shirt with the Superman/girl symbol, red high top converse shoes, and a red cape that we acquired for free at a superhero birthday party last weekend, plus the aforementioned headband. What I love most is that almost all the pieces can be used as regular clothing later. The red skirt can be paired with something else and just be a great skirt. The blue shirt with the super symbol can be worn with other shorts or pants. The red high top converse can be worn with any outfit they match, and even the headband could just be worn with a blue outfit. The only thing that's not reusable as normal clothing is the cape, which we got for free. Well, today I found the black shirt and pants and a black cat headband. Most items seem to have designs on them, so I was actually starting to wonder if I'd even be able to find a solid black top. I looked at a couple of knitted cat hats and a few types of headbands before dh stumbled upon the clear winner. Very soft fabric. The second was matted and just looked a hot mess. Back to the drawing board. Maybe we can use DD's hair and color spray (I was hoping to avoid that...) She will wear her cowboy boots with it. I need to make some ears on a head band, a mane and a tail from tulle. Still looking for a cowboy hat to complete the outfit. We just have to make her a tail (easy!) and she will be good to go. Still looking for the gold and maroon tie. Got a large plastic salad bowl the right size and shape for the top part of BB 8 today too. I'm over it. you can order some really cool wands from ebay. with a lighted tip, they're still under $15. they do come from hong kong, so order early. We did have some good costumes though, many homemade. One year I made Star Wars capes and a yoda costume for the youngest. We got a lot of compliments on the astronaut costume where we made a helmet out of paper mache. The older wasn’t sure what he wanted to be until we saw a Camp Half-blood sweatshirt on Amazon. He’s going as Percy Jackson. Sweatshirt and jeans are an easy costume. We found an "official" HP gold & maroon tie...but not in the costume section, LOL. It was with men's ties, which were hanging right by the register (which is the only reason we found it). $1 -- score!! ETA: we also found a cauldron-shaped candy bucket for $0.50, so now she has a cauldron to tote around, too. He was Tigger, DH was Pooh, and I was Darby. I got the Tigger costume at a consignment sale for $10 and I pieced everything else together at Goodwill for under $20, including a yellow child's sweatshirt that I cut apart and made into a Pooh hood for DH. We ordered it. She needed the small/medium (size 2) they sent a medium/large (size 14). A neighbor is going to take it in for us. However, on the site the boys ninja costumes were on clearance for $4. I no longer need to piece those outfits together. Yay. She did make her decision, and yesterday it arrived, and she is THRILLED with it. :) DD#2 is going to be a question block from a Mario game. We still need to get the supplies and make it, but it seems like it'll be a pretty simple task. DS...I had the awesomest idea yesterday. I told DH that we should dress him in a Gryffindor Hogwarts uniform, because he has the same first name as Longbottom and will happily tell people, "My name is [name]!" It would be the cutest thing ever. But...we already have a cow costume that fits him (both the girls wore it in the past). We found a Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles shell at a discount store, and she added markings with colored tape on the carapace and plastron. We are using a blue hoodie and appliquéd a Squirtle face to the hood (she figures she can wear Pokemon after Halloween), and she'll wear that with blue leggings and the shell for Squirtle. For the Red Eared slider, it's the same except that she used The brown hoodie from last year's Horned lizard costume, removed the burlap horns, and added markings to it. We're using stiffened felt to make clawed flippers to stick out over her hands. I had planned on baby wearing her, but she might really want to get down watching big brother trick-or-treat. Dd1 has black leggings, borrow my black lonf sleeve shirt, using her grey furry hooded vest. I made her a bat wing cape, mask and bat ears to pin on her hood. But I had to laugh remembering a spectacular failure. K wanted to go as the Eye of Sauron from The Lord of The Rings trilogy. So, the plan was to paint some posterboard to make the "eye" and to build a structure off of his shoulders and he would black out his face to be the pupil. Well, we got it all together, he put it on and looked in the mirror. "Nope! Nope! Not going to wear this!" I was trying not to be hurt after all the work I put into it. "I look like a flower." Adult DS's degree is in theater and he does cosplay a lot. All I can say is, "wow!" And everything was found in our garage! DD is going to be a wolf. We picked up various components at different stores. No idea for DH and me. I might bail this year. Maybe they aren't that dangerous for being worn briefly and they just don't condone it for their ages because they don't want the kids to eat it. I don't know. She says that is a female bandit, and it involves several flowing scarves, a ruffled tank top, and a long dress-up skirt. DS has wanted to be Batman for months. I made a black T-shirt with an attached cape, and painted a Batman logo on the front. I wimped out and ordered a mask on Amazon Sunday. Yesterday he told me he wants to be Ironman instead. I think I can make something for around his neck from a painted dropcloth to hide the mane. The beak is no problem. Neither are the wings structurally because cardboard would work. I just need to inexpensively do something that will work for feathers. I can use some real feathers, but there is a financial constraint with the size of the project. I got her some John Lennon glasses from party city and a flower headwrap, and she will be good to go with her long hair parted in the middle, lol. Dd13 is going to be Wednesday Addams. I found the perfect dress at Forever 21 for cheap and the rest we already have (black tights/shoes). She'll braid her hair, wear pale makeup with red lipstick. We already have a red cape and she has a Supergirl headband so that is one free costume. My 3 year old is being the Flash. We made him a mask and the logo for the shirt with felt. He just needs red pants which I'm going to try to make out of an old red shirt of dh's. Another free costume! Dd6 is being wonder woman. We made her costume out of felt, red shirt, and blue pants we already had. 3rd free costume. Ds7 wants to be Aang. I do not have any yellow pants or orange fabric so I will have to shell out some money for it. Just for fun, I'm also making a second costume for dd with the intention to get a photo of us dressed as Adventure Time people (dd as Beemo, ds as Finn and me as Marceline. Toy Jake in the pic. Dh refused to be Ice King lol). Ds was Finn another year. It's not practical for dd to wear the Beemo box so that's just for photos. Dd15 is going to be a hippie.
