luckymom
I am not sure what to do. Our dog got a chin/lip-full of porcupine quills. The vet is saying that at MINIMUM it will cost $300-$500 to have them removed. I CANNOT afford that. And, I tried holding her and removing them but she is snapping at me and won't allow it. 38carrots
Many vets would consider a payment plan. The longer they are in, the higher the chances of one of them moving into the blood stream. And more damage when removed. You need to take care of this as soon as possible. Many don't recommend removing yourself anyway, as it causes more damage. Though we recently removed some from our horse, and his face healed really nicely. Your poor pup!

38carrots
Also, call other vets! The removal from our horse didn't cost nearly as much. Though they say horses are cheaper to treat than dogs.
Anne in CA
My dad used to do it for our dog, it wasn't pretty, though.
Slache
Call the emergency vet and ask. If they're good they'll recommend someone to help for less money. If you're in Portland call Dove Lewis.
madteaparty
Apparently, it has to be done at the vet. The quills travel and get infected or whatever. Or else we are suckers. My idiot dog (whom I love in all her idiocy) got a face full of quills and it cost us $1000 and a 2 hour drive in the middle of the night. Pawz4me
Was it an e-vet who quoted you the $300-$500 (I'm guessing maybe so given the time)? If so contact your local vet, or some local vet, this morning. I suspect the cost will be much less. It costs an arm and a leg just to walk in the door at an e-vet. :grouphug: :grouphug: :grouphug:
ktgrok
it really has to be done under sedation, as you have found out. The dog has to be totally knocked out. And then several staff members will work on pulling them out, plus antibiotics, pain meds, etc. It will definitely cost. Call around and ask about a payment plan, or try applying for care credit online...most vets take it and there is no interest in the first 6 months.

38carrots
Update? I've been thinking about this as well. OP, I hope the quils were safely removed and your dog is doing well.

luckymom
I am sorry for not updating sooner. It has been pet and dc mayhem around here lately. After posting here, I remembered a local farmer who everyone turns to for any/all questions and texted him. He was kind enough to tell me he'd be over and take care of it! He was amazing with our dog and removed every quill while soothing her with his words. He wouldn't take anything more than a cup of coffee and some avocado toast! Dog is in great shape.
