MDL
Hi, I'm trying to justify purchasing the new edition. I have the 3rd edition in hardcover. And I can get the kindle version (3rd ed) from the library, pretty much any time I need it, and it keeps my highlights. I'm trying to figure out if I should buy the 4th edition and, if so, which format. Any opinions? I am never upset for the reason I think. 73349
I prefer paper for a reference book, Kindle for things I'm only going to read once. I got it in hardcover and put in about 8 sticky flags for things I want to go back to.
Chrysalis Academy
I like hard copies for reference books, too - things I'll be thumbing through looking for specific sections, rereading only partially multiple times. I wouldn't find a Kindle version of this particular book useful, given how I use it. As far as whether you need the 4th edition - depends on where you are at in the journey. I have one starting Logic stage and one starting Rhetoric stage, so it was definitely worth it for me. I was very impressed with the 4th ed, it is a meaningful revision of the previous - the science sections have been revamped, the writing instruction clarified, and in general the focus is much more on how to teach the subjects than on specific curriculum recommendations. Those are in there, but there is also the acknowledgement that that stuff changes quickly, so you are referred to online lists that will be updated. More pages in the book are devoted to helping you figure out how to teach, not just what to teach.
redsquirrel
I personally prefer hard copies of reference type books, cookbooks, etc. My WTM books are all marked up. I own the first and the third. I make notes in the appropriate sections of resources I want to use as my kids get older etc. I also highlight things. I only have a couple years left with ds2 at home, ds1 is already off to public high school, so I won't get the new edition. But I will get it out of the library and make notes in my 3rd ed of changes in resource etc.
MDL
Thanks. I tend to not lug the big book around, but highlights in kindle are not as in your face as a post it ... I have one moving into logic stage (6th grade this year), and one in grammar (1st). So I'm back in the book this year prepping/freaking myself out/getting excited for the next phase. JudoMom
I ordered it so my 1st, 2nd, and 3rd editions wouldn't be lonely. I prefer hardcover, though the kindle price on the 3rd edition dropped at one point, so I have that one in both options. RootAnn
I'm hoping to get it once the price drops a little more, since no one got it for me as a birthday present. I'm definitely getting the hard copy because I like to make notes and keep bookmarks in certain sections. Ny oldest is in high school, but I also have a first grader, so I can justify one (or two) more edition(s).
abrightmom
Hardcover. :hurray: 4th edition just arrived a few days ago. I love it more than my trusty 3rd edition. Though I've only perused it I can see that it has more practical helps which I NEED a lot more than curriculum lists. This is an improvement over the 3rd edition that makes it worth the $$. SWB never fails to deliver excellent literature lists as well, though I don't know how 3rd and 4th editions compare on that front. With 1st, 4/5th, 6th and 8th graders I have no doubt this 4th edition will be utilized extensively. I will read it from cover to cover this fall ....
