...................
My son is taking German 1 through Landry and I'm a little concerned. Today was the second class and they spent the entire class going through listening to one student at a time recite a bible verse in German and the Alphabet. She only taught new material for about ten minutes, if that. Also, out of the first chapter, only three very very short sections are assigned, that my son could complete in ten minutes. I told him that of course in high school, he should use the book to its fullest and discussed how to take notes and vocab lists for a foreign language class, and that he could fill it by doing the non-assigned exercises verbally with me. THis book is on the easy/gentle side which is fine, it's freshman year. But, I am really wondering if Landry classes are this light in general? And I'll take suggestions for next year. :o)
FriedClams
No, not normally. My kids took 2-3 each last year and they were very, very good. I have one in German 1 also and I'm hoping it picks up too. We had previously done Rocket German and I think I'll be adding that back in. Heatherwith4
I am wondering the same thing. My DS is taking a math class this year, and so far it's super easy. I did tell him that I remembered the first couple weeks of math always being very easy when I was in school. (He's not a high schooler, btw, but I saw this thread and nosed in anyway. )
OneStepAtATime
I have found this is very dependent on the teacher. Some teachers really put a lot of time and effort into making the courses robust and thorough while others seem to want to give the kids an easy grade. Hopefully, the class will pick up after the first couple of weeks. I know they had some technical issues early on since they switched start dates and interface software so maybe teachers were keeping it light in some subjects until they were sure all the kids could log on properly, etc.
OhioMomof3
I agree with OneStepAtATime. Our experience has been similar. However, we haven't had students in any LA foreign language courses.
klmama
I don't know if the teacher has shared the online resources with the students, but they might help your ds improve his understanding of the material. http://irc.emcp.com/index.php?titleID=2640&title=Deutsch%20Aktuell%206e%20Level%201 ETA: I just looked at a couple, and they don't seem to have a self-check feature. The listening activities might be helpful. Edited August 31, 2016 by klmama
TrulySusan
Has your DS had German before? My son is in Landry's German 1 and to us the pace seems fine. For him, this is his absolute first exposure to the German language and no one in our family knows German to provide him any help. It took him about a week to learn the alphabet sounds and how to say and write the verse. He worked on it daily, but not for hours or anything. I think Landry's class is teaching to the level of a true beginner, which I am guessing your son is not, since you mentioned being able to help him with book exercises and your ability to judge the level of the textbook. Maybe it will improve for your family once the class gets to material he doesn't know. The only other Landry class we have done was English IV last year, and I thougt it was pretty challenging for 8th grade.
Tess in the Burbs
My son is in German I this year. I did hear him speak several times in class this morning. I remember from high school the teacher going around the class asking questions and we had to reply in the language. It was most of the classroom experience...talking in the language. I asked my son about today. He said everyone had to speak. Then it was random letters, not just the abc song. He did say it was helpful when others spoke b/c he knew right away if it was right or wrong based on how he knew the letters at that point. I went through the homework list. There is a practice online up to 4 tries to do. There is some workbook. Only a few to do. This did seem short. Lots of audio files though. If they listened to all 17 several times during the week it would take up time. And they would learn it well. Since my son knows ZERO German I don't think the pace is too slow. I do expect it to pick up like any school course. I have found all our Landry classes to be very full. And some I expected to be light actually had WAY MORE work than I felt was needed. So I think in a few weeks it will be filled with longer assignments.
...................
Well I do not speak German but find it easy to understand and figure out...I still think it's on the light side, but maybe it's for the better as my son has three other pretty intense commitments and one average....so even if it is a bit light maybe that's a good thing, as I am not expecting him to be fluent in German by senior year..so maybe I should just relax and be happy. He is REALLY enjoying the class and the book, so that is a huge plus!!! :hurray:
RootAnn
I had to laugh, CT, when I read your sig and saw the Landry German class listed twice for your son. It must have been on your mind a lot when you updated your sig. :)
