Memory foam/tempurpedic mattress topper vs whole mattress

DD17 has a chronic pain issue.  She has found that if she sleeps on a memory foam bed, that it doesn't bother her as much when she wakes up.  Her regular mattress is a high end one from IKEA and is 1.5  years old.

I was planning to replace it with a  whole memory foam mattress but she thinks she would prefer just a topper from Costco, so she can still have a bit of the bounce of a regular bed.  She has slept on both (topper and mattress) at different peoples homes and found them both comfortable.

Any suggestions?

If we get her a whole mattress, I will give her old mattress to dd9, so it isn't a loss.  I was getting ready to buy dd9 a new one this year anyways.

If you can use the other mattress, I would suggest an entire new mattress.

I have had both, and there is a difference with the entire bed being memory foam vs. just a topper.  I thought the topper was comfortable until I had the mattress.

I prefer a good quality topper over a really good mattress versus a memory foam mattress. But the caveat is that I've only slept on a memory foam mattress for a week while at a VRBO. It's possible I'd learn to love a memory foam mattress if I slept on it longer than that, but for that week the cons definitely outweighed the pros. On our mattress at home a memory foam topper on an already good (new Simmons Beautyrest) mattress made for perfect comfort.

Dss15 has back pain too. We are taking him to the chiropractor this week, but we already know he needs a better mattress now that he is here full time. His room upstairs is huge but has A frame walls so we want to do a very low bed on a platform that Dh will build. Our plan is a 10 inch memory foam only on the platform. Does anyone have an opinion on that? I have to special order the size (full size xl) so I am a little nervous.

Sorry to thread jack Tap....I will start another thread if you want.

My mom with chronic pain has found the whole memory foam mattress better than just a topper. Perhaps you could buy both so your dd could try them and her sister could have the one that didn't work as well. It's so important to have a good bed when you struggle with chronic pain. :grouphug:

I like toppers better (4 inch or more).  We had a 12 inch memory foam (the brand that advertises with the sheep) and I would not move the entire night, when I woke up my back was always in awful shape. I ended up sleeping on the couch most nights.  Now I've got one of those cheap-ish bouncy mattresses with a 4 inch topper and it is much better for my particular back issues.

We've gone through 3 mattress in the past year and a half. Granted, the first one was defective, mbut the second one was a good one, but we'd just wake up sore every morning. And we did have a topper. Finally, we bought a Novaform (I think that's what it's called) and have been very happy. I think we got it at Costco. Sorry I'm not sure about all this DH did all the leg work, I just sleep on it. But it is a foam mattress and we do like it. :)

Check sleepez.com -- we've had great customer service from them and love our mattresses.

From what you've said about his weight issues, he might get better support with a box spring. My one son really doesn't get enough support without it. Other son, who is much smaller, does fine without the extra support.

My only concern is that by not having the boxspring you may void the warranty. That is what they told us when we bought our but who knows maybe they saw two idiots coming and upsold us??? lol FWIW we would have bought both anyway but I believe it did become part of the discussion when we were buying.
