Here's the track if you don't know it:

Lyrics here:

http://www.metrolyrics.com/reasons-to-be-cheerful-part-3-lyrics-ian-dury-the-blockheads.html

Anyway, my Reasons to be Cheerful:

- Hobbes received the GCSE national exam results that he wanted and is able to go on studying his chosen subjects for the next two years

- Someone close to me who has been struggling with mental illness is doing a bit better on medication and has just started a job

- Developing friendships with my co-workers that I think will go beyond just workplace chitchat

- The sun just came out and I'm spending the rest of the day in the garden

- Mum's doing better - happier and easier to be with

Yours?  If you have none today, I hope you enjoyed the song and that tomorrow is better.

My reasons:

1. So far I really like my job.   I will admit it is overwhelming because it is new to me and I am not sure what I am meant to be doing, but that will come!

2.  I love my main co-worker.  I thought she was from India (she is technically) but we discovered Friday after talking that we both grew up in Kenya!  What a wonderful clashing of our worlds.

3. I HAVE a job!  I am so thankful.  Many don't.

4. My kids start a new school tomorrow and they are excited and nervous, and mostly excited.

I think we might have worked out a flexible schedule with the international school that will make dh and ds happy.

Another ds should be able to start a part-time volunteer thing soon, something not easy to arrange here.

The other ds is liking school.

Dh is visiting some very old friends in another city today that neither of us have seen in at least 15 years.

It was only 85 early this morning when I was working in the garden and I figured out what a mystery package is in my fridge and made something really yummy with it. And I get to live in a really interesting country.

I had received an unexpected bill for my daughter's wisdom teeth removal, after insurance review.  The insurance should have paid it all - we had met our deductible for the year.  I called the oral surgeon's office and she said she would resubmit the bill.  Yesterday I saw that the claim had gone through the second time and was fully paid.  Even though I was pretty sure they would pay it, it was a worry that it would drag on and on.

My kids' books for community college classes were not too expensive.

My son had been working all summer as a general helper/gofer/cleaner at a local welding shop. He put in his notice now that school is starting, but asked if there was any way they could use him one day a week (or half day).  The boss said yes, and went on to say that he should just show up when he could, talk to the foreman, and work.  No schedule, no specific commitments, just show up as his classes and homework allow.   That was a huge boost for this kid - things don't come easy for him, ever.

Nice thread.  Sometimes I get in a bad mood and forget about the good things that happen.  I try to keep a gratitude list but when I get in the bad mood I forget about it.

I do not live in an area that has suffered a recent natural disaster. A neighbor we do not know well stopped by on Friday to give us a big box of bagels and cream cheese left over from a work meeting (I don't do the carbs but DH and DDs are loving them). Another neighbor gratefully and graciously accepted our offer of an overabundance of okra.  It was cool enough this morning that I completed my walking goal without getting hot and miserable.  I think I've found a wildlife expert who can help us with our bat residents in a humane way.

This is good!  I could keep going.  Great thread.

Thanks for this thread. I have been in a self-absorbed funk for a few days and I'm rather sick of myself. Time to change the self-talk:

1. I'm sitting outside sipping my favorite tea, listening to leaves gently rustle in the warm breeze. And the birds are happily chirping. Everything is so green and pretty!

2. My boys seem to be adjusting to full-time school fairly well.

3. My husband has a decent job. And he's healthy. And he's a good dad. And he cooks. And he's still pretty darn cute.

4. It's only 9:00 and I already got a great workout in.

5. The Little League World Series is on today. (I don't really care for baseball but I have a connection to the U.S. team and these kids have been so fun to watch!)

My husband made it successfully to Taipei, after a derailed attempt to get there a month ago due to a medical issue.  (He made it to CA, then had to fly back home and cancel the trip)

I had the most delicious curry today a our favorite Thai restaurant.  It was seriously comfort food level of yumminess.

My oldest dd and I received enough scholarships this year to pay for our tuition, books AND a little extra.

My middle child sat still and focused long enough to play his very first complete board game with the family. Amazing and wonderful!

Same middle child is so proud of his progress in learning to read. It's so fun to watch him want to learn more.

All of my clean laundry is folded and put away.

My older boys built a massive fort and played in it all day.

I knocked out 40 squats with a 50 pound kid on my back. I'm pretty proud of that!
