Spelling and OPGTR

I wouldn't start spelling until reading lessons are done, or child is 6yo+, but that's just me.  I know Spalding does spelling along with phonics and so do a few others, but it didn't work that way in our house.  We briefly tried spelling last year (AAS1 followed by a more traditional approach).  He learned it quickly but couldn't apply it in free writing.  We scaled back to just doing copywork & Dictation Day By Day, then this year continuing that along with a spelling program.  The difference is night and day.  The year of slowly learning how to write did wonders, and the spelling lessons are much more relaxed and easily applied now that he's had the time to practice writing.

Thanks. We do a lot of copywork and dictation. And she tends to memorize a lot of words that she uses in writing. Right now her writing is pretty basic and simple.

I followed Jesse Wise' recommendation to start a spelling program after the middle of OPGTR With my ds'.

Was your DS reading fluently then? I think we are getting close to halfway or will be there in a couple of weeks/month. Dd still sounds out a lot of the newer lessons words, but is gaining fluency with the earlier concepts. Dd is also pretty young, but asks me to spell or dictate often and occasionally attempts to spell on her own (she prefers copywork/dictation)

How old? My dd was ready for opg at 4, but she wasn't ready for spelling till she was About 6. We had finished or nearly finished opg by then. And when we did start spelling, we had to struggle through cat and simple cvc words like any other child. She's doing 5th grade spelling now, in 5 th grade. Reading words co,mEs much easier than spelling them for most kids.

She's 4, turning 5 in December. She can spell words like cat and hot if she needs to. And can seperate sounds out in a word if I have her say it slowly. Not difficult words with tricky phomograms, but simpler words such as fish and pink. She needs encouragement to say the word slowly and pick out the sounds, but can do it.

I feel like we will wait to do more formal spelling until we are finished and just stick with what we're doing now for the time being. Right now, I just encourage her to say words slowly to pick out the sounds to write the word. We don't have a spelling time.
