Lucy the Valiant
Has anyone had experience with financial aid through CTY? [Editing to add: The online and summer course program from Johns Hopkins, I mean.] Interested in some classes, but they seem extremely expensive. I've read all the content on their site about financial aid, but can't seem to find out if that means "we'll take $25 off" or "the class will be quite reasonable." I realize it's probably based on specific financial info, just looking for anyone BTDT. Edited August 27, 2016 by Lucy the Valiant

I realize it's probably based on specific financial info, just looking for anyone BTDT. Do you mean CYT? Christian Youth Theater? Sorry, no help. The time commitment kept us out, but I bet if we'd had the time, the $ would have been too much for us. We're blessed w/ friends who run a theater group that does hold auditions, but for who gets the parts, not for who makes it in. Their productions don't suffer for that policy, either. We just saw one of theirs and they did the same play I'd seen CYT do a couple of years ago. It was as good if not better. All this rambling is to say, if it's too pricey, look around for alternatives, even if you have to travel a bit. It would only be for the rehearsals, tech, week and shows. I hope you find your answer, though.
Lucy the Valiant
Oh, I'm sorry for being unclear: I was referring to Johns Hopkins University's CTY, Center for Talented Youth. They have been recommended in other threads here as good options for online courses (that are maybe not locally accessible), and I was just wondering how their financial aid actually works on a practical level. Ha, then I sure have egg on my face! Sorry for that, especially since I wasn't helpful w/ the wrong topic!

I appreciate that!
tmstranger
My son is in CTY. We have not taken any classes as of yet. A while back, I met a woman who worked for them. I told her we hadn't done the classes and her words were, "You know we offer financial aid? You can get help even if you make as much as $40k!" Well, hubby makes more than that, so I never investigated it more. That's all I know, but she did give me the impression that could help significantly if the need was there. It can't hurt to try, right?
Porridge
I live in the Bay Area, where the cost of living is high, and thus, average salaries might be higher compared to other parts of the US. I was told by a local gifted "guru" (deeply involved in gifted community) that they have never seen anyone get financial aid for CTY. Probably doesn't hurt to try, but it does seem like it's pretty hard to get...
Dmmetler
It seems to be difficult unless you qualify for Free/reduced lunch. Having said that, if you live in an area with a college that participates, a good score can qualify for a free college class, so that's worth testing in 7th grade+.

MinivanMom
You really have to be in the free/reduced lunch range to quality, but it never hurts to apply. My understanding is that Duke TIP is much more generous with financial aid. In the past, I had seen a scale that showed families with incomes up to 70k could qualify. I don't know if attending the Duke camps would be a possibility based on where you live, but generally you can just submit your test scores to other Talent Search programs if you want to apply to their summer programs.
