Pacing for FLL level 1? (& comparing to Queen LLEC)

I've looked everywhere I can think of including a search of this forum.  I have a would-be 2nd grader and we are doing FLL level 1 because she's never done anything formal with grammar, etc.

 

The book has 100 lessons and I'm just wondering what they expect in terms of pacing because I'm guessing they assume it is done in a single (school) year?  I looked at Lesson 2 (poem memorization) and it threw me.  I suspect they assume that working on poem memorization in tandem with other lessons because there is notation for poem memorization review during the next two lessons.

 

If you followed a typical 32 to 40-ish week school year, That means 2-3 lessons/week.  Am I "off" here?  I was hoping to move her though it a bit quicker to catch her up but I'm not seeing that being a possibility.

 

I have some question as to why someone opts for FLL vs. Queen Homeschooling's Language Lessons (so help me I have confused these two for easily 3 years).

First of all, you can just jump to FLL 2 with a second grader. It will be fine. 

 

It's meant to be done three or four times a week. So if you do it four times a week that means it will get done in 25 school weeks.  So, three lessons a week should be just fine.  And if you skip some lessons it's not the end of the world, kwim?  Most FLL lessons take only a few minutes, so it's not a big deal.

 

They have supplemental exercises in them, but we never did those. We used WWE and that took the place of all the extra stuff in FLL 1&2. 

 

And yes, the poem memorization is done for a bit, until it is mastered, while you move on with other lessons. Again, it takes about 3 mins. You read the poem a few times out loud and have the child listen. Then you tell the child to give it a shot and you add in words where ever they miss one. Then you read it again and stop at the end of every line and have the child supply the word etc. It doesn't take long for them to memorize it, only a few days.

 

They are reviewed periodically throughout the year.

 

I've never looked at Queen homeschooling language lessons, so I can't help you there. But I have been through FLL 1-4 twice.

You can easily start FLL2 with a second grader. They cover the same information just faster.

I have tried queens before. It is very light, and honestly not much for your money. I would go with FLL2, as it is a much better introduction to grammar.

I can't compare because FLL is all I have used with my kids before 6th grade.

 

We have done 15 minutes 3x a week and it works fine.

 

Just the straight up grammar. We skipped the poems (We do our own list of poems, just not with grammar.) and the picture narrations and did almost everything orally. No dictation or copywork, except to copy the definitions and lists.

 

I used the old combo book and I think it had less repetition than the new ones. We did not do 30+ lessons on nouns!

 

With a 2nd grader, definitely skip up to FLL2.
