Writing with skill 1 for 9th grade? or something else

Recommended Posts

I have a soon to be 9th grade boy who has been struggling with writing for the past 2 years or so.  We have done many oral and written narrations, and he does O.K. on these-not great but average.  His twin does excellent in comparison.  When we have worked on essay writing, he just can't do it unless I am sitting with him and helping him get his thoughts in order.  He needs to talk everything out and really needs help organizing his thoughts into sentences and main points for his essays.

I am wondering what to do with him this year.  Would Writing with Skill be helpful for him?  Or does anyone know of another idea?  I am going to listen to the audio talks from S.Bauer tonight and go back to the middle school lectures, as well as the high school lectures.  It would be nice, however , to have a prepared curriculum to help him with is weaknesses.

Thanks

I'm using it with my 9th grader this year as part of his English 1 course. He has done Essentials in Writing 7 & 8 and lots of essay writing with scaffolding, but while he improves in different areas, he doesn't have a complete set of skills yet. We just started it, but I am hopeful that it will help solidify those skills.

My 10th grader is working through parts of WWS1 this year. I felt like he needed some shoring up on some skills. I went through and selected lessons... he'll be done with about a trimester left in the year and we'll be tackling something different then (he's also doing several weeks of travel journal and a month of NaNoWriMo during those first two trimesters).

We did it in 8th.  I don't regret it for an instant.  WWS helped to really solidify all the skills we had been trying to teach over years and sent him into public high able to write a decent paper.

So was he well prepared for high school writing with the foundation of WWS1 alone?
