mymomtime
I assessed my 6 year old (he will be 7 end of Dec) using 40Ls Quick Screen Grade Level test from the Phonics Page. He scored 4th grade. I'm going to see how he does with the nonsense words tomorrow. We are currently at the beginning of All About Spelling 2. If I were to continue phonic instruction, what could I use? We finished OPGTR. I like scripted, because I feel like I need the direction. And I want it to be engaging for an active boy. Or should we just keep reading. I do lots of read alouds, have him read to me a few times a week, and he does a fair amount of silent reading (around level & below). Glad I've got him at home and can teach him where he is at. Jackie
We did a couple levels of AAS before DD asked to stop because it was boring. Other than that, we never did do a phonics curric. She reads wonderfully and spells decently. I had her regularly read aloud to me until she was at a solid 4th or 5th grade level, and then stopped doing it as a part of school. We'll still sometimes sit with a big stack of picture books and trade off reading them to each other, so I'm sure she's reading well. HomeAgain
We stopped phonics instruction after 100 EZ lessons. He grasped new rules quickly from just reading so I didn't bother doing anything else. He reads very well, but I continue to have him read a small piece out loud to me each day to work on expression. Black-eyed Suzan
Are you happy with All About Spelling? I do phonics through spelling after they are reading well.
Sarah0000
I don't know my son's reading level but he is able to read Magic Tree House and Thornton Burgess books. We didn't do a phonics program, but I am quickly going through "A Crash Course in Polysyllables" from the Phonics Page with him, then over this semester I plan to have him do some of ETC 4 which I believe is suppose to have syllable division rules practice. I want to ensure he continues to have practice seeing parts of words until he starts spelling.
