Webcam needed for live online classes?

Recommended Posts

DD hasn't had one & won't have one this year. She's taking classes from several different providers (including WHA & Sr Gamache). She prefers NOT to be on camera, so we won't be buying one just to have one. We did nix a provider that required a webcam for class (Kolbe), but that wasn't the sole reason for eliminating them.

Thanks for this info. Ds13 doesn't like to be on camera either, so we will skip it for now.

re: Kolbe

The requirements listed on their webpages included a webcam for at least one of the two classes I looked at for this school year. While the individual teachers might not use them, the requirement was stated. I believe I also asked in an email and was told that some classes required it. That may have changed since last year. I haven't bothered to look since then.

ETA: I did a very quick check. Here is a link to at least one page that lists a webcam as required: http://www.kolbe.org/academics/courses-and-curriculum/online/technical-requirements/

I will say that WHA's Fundamentals of Expository Writing doesn't state that a webcam is required, but there is a presentation that the kids do that requires the student to be on camera. I don't know what happens if you don't have access to one. There have been a few other times when the teacher has requested that kids show work on the webcam, but not everyone has. I don't think it has affected their grade. I wanted to update that, since this thread popped back up.
