Can you go through ETC too fast?

My DD finished 100 Easy Lessons a few months ago. We've been reading through Bob Books since, then, but recently picked up Explode the Code (book 2). DD was super excited about it before she even knew what it was - because of the name, I guess. She's been doing 3-4 pages every day including the weekends at her own request. We were thinking it would be like 2 pages per day on weekdays originally. My wife is worried that she'll go through it too fast and everything won't have time to sink in. We've been spending almost as much time doing some of the exercises in the teacher's manual to make the lessons last an extra day or two, which is mostly thinking of words that go with the lesson or dictating words and she writes them on a whiteboard (writing is her favorite thing at the moment). 

 

I'm thinking it's just a combination of book 2 being too easy for her, it's still new and exciting, and she loves writing, of which it has a lot. Also, I'm doubting that you can really practice reading and writing too much, especially if you're enjoying it, but at the pace she's been going she'll finish this book in a month.

If it's that easy, she's probably mastered the material. I wouldn't worry about it. I mean, generally, yes, you can run through a program too fast. But ETC doesn't have ways to pause and review. It doesn't circle back around to the previous material until later books when there are some phrases and sentences included. So it doesn't lend itself to slowing down as a program in general. If kids need more practice with the concepts, they usually need another program or to actually sit and read with the parent some more. But really, book 2? That's a stage that goes very fast for a lot of kids. I'd let her keep working and not worry about it. Congrats on having a kid who's so motivated and excited to read.

 ABC and 1-4 we did 4 pages a day, on average. 5-6 got harder so we did 3 pages a day, and 7-8 got 2 pages a day. Even when it was easy, I still did make her hit all the lessons, because I wanted the rules she was learning to sink in. But I did let her do every other problem on some pages or half the pages in a unit, etc, and it still worked very well for her.

You can always review later with a mastery program like Blend Phonics, free online, the mastery layout it makes it easy to skip sections and move on to areas that do need review.

 

Reading is such an important skill, I reviewed for a few years after the basics were taught, it only takes a week or two and is well worth it, you can also add in spelling rules while you review, here is how to add in spelling rules and syllables and syllable division to Blend Phonics as a review for a student taught with phonics:
