Pam "SFSOM" in TN
Remember this is Maureen Dowd. Please don't kill the messenger (ME!) if you hate her or her message. And if you don't like the NYT, ditto. Hugs to you all. Peace. Etc. Disclaimers all around. But I thought this would be of interest to our board. JennifersLost
Awesome! I just printed out two copies so my son and I can use it for translation practice. Thanks, Pam!
Karenciavo
Hmm, her third paragraph had me thinking she was going to advise her audience to flee from Obama, “Avoid whatever is approved of by the mob, and things that are the gift of chance. Whenever circumstance brings some welcome thing your way, stop in suspicion and alarm ...They are snares. ... we think these things are ours when in fact it is we who are caught. That track leads to precipices; life on that giddy level ends in a fall.†
Mama Lynx
Well that was ... interesting. I won't shoot the messenger, but that was ... interesting. LOL. Will definitely print it out to show the kids.

Mama Lynx
You know all this proves? That my 2 lessons worth of LL isn't going to help me read this. Many words are made up, though - English words Latinized.
Pam "SFSOM" in TN
 Many words are made up, though - English words Latinized. And some English words just left alone. ("V." cracked me up, though -- "(because there’s no W. in Latin)." And "Tu betchus!" left me ! Yes, "loosely and creatively" was how she described the professor's process of "translation." I think it was more for entertainment value than intended to be seen as a scholarly effort. :001_smile:

Mama Lynx
Post in which I sigh, and roll my eyes, and point out all the flaws in Dowd's grammar, and opine that a REAL intellectual would have written that in Greek. ;-)
Zelda
 Many words are made up, though - English words Latinized. Doh! When I glanced at it my eyes went all crossy and my brain shut down. Missed the joke completely. Slinking back to read it now.

Michelle in MO
Even if I don't understand all that she's saying, and may not agree with all that she's saying, I love her reference to the classics and the great attempt at Latin! Thanks for posting this! I wish I could rep. you just for finding this and posting it. Edited October 12, 2008 by Michelle in MO
