LauraBeth475
What are the pros and cons of these tests? I've used the CAT 5 for years, and liked it (as well as one can a standardized test) but Seton Testing appears to have discontinued it. luuknam
Do you (or whomever will be administering it) have a bachelor's degree? If not, TerraNova 2 aka CAT 6 it is (PASS is another option). Otherwise, I've heard that the Iowa does a better job with kids in higher percentiles (on the TerraNova 2/CAT 6 one of my kids scored 55th percentile on a subtest for missing 2 out of 20 questions, which is a little ridiculous, since the kid could've just as easily missed 1 or 3 questions, which presumably would've led to wildly different percentile scores - that said, that was the 1st grade test; the 3rd grade test seemed to be a bit better about higher percentiles). So, I didn't think the test was as useful as it could've been, but it was plenty good enough for state standardized testing requirements and the kids thought the test was okay (didn't love it, but didn't hate it either). LauraBeth475
I do have a bachelor degree. I expect the 1st and 2nd graders to be in higher percentiles and the 7th grader to be in lower ones.
Tess in the Burbs
I haven't used the TerraNova yet. But I like IOWA. I did have to go through the sections with % and really look at it. For my DS I found he didn't answer all the questions. So the % was his correct one to all the questions. but if he only did 1 out of 6 and it was right, really he was 100% not lower. But IOWA did show how many total problems, how many my kid attempted and got right. Easy to figure out if they didn't know something in that section or not. My only gripe is how long it is. StephH
We have used IOWA testing for the last 7 years, and love that test. They cover all the subjects not just math and reading. I also like that it includes a Lexile level in the report. Edited August 1, 2016 by StephH
luuknam
We have used IOWA testing so for the last 7 years, and love that test. They cover all the subjects not just math and reading. I also like that it includes a Lexile level in the report. TerraNova covers social studies, science, etc etc too, so that's not really an advantage of the Iowa vs the TerraNova. ETA: personally not a fan of Lexile scores at all for reading level determinations. Edited August 1, 2016 by luuknam
