Do you put numbers or letters for grades on the transcript?

Recommended Posts

I would rather just put letters. I have my children redo anything they do not do excellent work in. So, even if they got a 95% of a test, I would make them go through and correct it. It is about learning the subject, not just trying for a grade. I know colleges typically do A, A- and so on, around here anyway, but percent numbers in high school, but then those percent numbers are weighted. And colleges want the unweighted grades for college admissions. It feels like a complete game and I don't want to get in to it. Is there anything wrong with putting letter grades instead of number grades?

I did letter grades, with no +/-.  I did explain in the school profile that any +/- from outside sources were converted to their base score.  That meant that any A- was listed just as an A, but also that any B+ was listed as a B on the high school transcript.

Transcripts from community colleges were sent directly to the colleges being applied to, so they could see what the original grade was.

I didn't feel that I wanted to draw that fine a distinction in home based courses, and thought that a mix of some courses with +/- and some without was confusing.

I give letter grades, because it's the norm where we live and to be consistent with the colleges where our kids have dual-enrolled during high school. I don't use +/-.

I grew up in Canada, where, as far as I know, transcripts always list number grades. The idea that two students, one who earns 100% in every course and one who consistently scores in the low 90s, can end up with identical transcripts still kind of blows my mind.
