How much daily reading for 4th grader?

Recommended Posts

Our reading is divided into "reading class" and free reading. Last year reading class consisted if 15-20 minutes of reading from assigned chapter books and 15-20 minutes of reading other books of his choice that were at least third grade reading level. Do you think the time alotments here are appropriate for a 4th grader too, or do we need to be upping this?

When my oldest was in public school 2nd grade they read for 30 min at school, and were required to read an additional 30 min at home for a total of 60 min per day. That did not include whatever reading was done in content areas or reading aloud or w/e - that was just sustained silent reading. So, yeah, 4th grade probably should have more reading than 15-20 min twice a day. There's also a table that shows how much kids scoring in various percentiles typically read (apparently it's 5th graders, but that's not too different from 4th graders, and, to be clear, it's how much they read outside of school, so your first 15-20 min definitely wouldn't count, not sure about the 2nd 15-20 min, but probably not either, since if he was in public school he'd probably be doing that much reading during the school day anyway):

That said, if your son almost always reads more than that for fun I wouldn't necessarily assign more books. On the other hand though, in 4th grade I'd expect more reading in content areas (my oldest is going into 4th grade this year, and during 3rd grade I fairly often would hand him a history or science book to read that went along with what we were learning about (he likes the "you wouldn't want to..." series*, for example) . I didn't quiz him on those books, and I know that some of those books he skimmed rather than read, but for 4th grade I'd have slightly higher expectations.

For 4th grade, my son's assigned reading was 10-15 minutes reading aloud, 30 minutes silent reading (his choice of reading material), and a book on an assigned topic for monthly book club.  He read alot on his own so I didn't feel the need to assign additional reading.

For 5th grade, I plan to be more deliberate about his silent reading selections.

In 4th grade my boy did daily:

- 30 minutes reading class using McGraw Hill Treasures lesson - Monday - Thursday 4-5 pieces of literature in varied genres (poetry, drama, non ficiton, fiction), vocabulary, comprehension skill, worksheets with Friday test

- 20 minutes independent reading self-selected book at reading level. No output necessary except a quarterly written book review.

- 20 minutes 2x a week novel study. An assigned book read aloud one-on-one with a workbook/guide covering vocabulary, plot, and comprehension. Took about 2-4  weeks a chapter book.

- 45 minutes group novel read aloud. Selections based on either boys' literature suggestions, current events, historical fiction, or just for fun.  Added biographies and other nonfiction as need arose.

Also read aloud textbooks in science and socials studies 2-3x a week for 20 minutes each. Other days were projects and documentaries.

Lastly, required 2 Raz-Kid books read and quizzes passed per week at level. (~20 minutes per title).
