Semple Math and Ronit Bird

Recommended Posts

Hello,

Can anyone please tell me the difference between the two?

I'll be helping a family member and debating between the two.  I've been reading the threads on these and it looks like Semple math is what I need.

This person's IQ is around 70, and I'm pretty sure has discalculia, disgraphia, and dyslexia (parents are pretty sure about this one).  This person is 7 1/2 yo and has to repeat 1st grade.  This person is also having a hard time getting basic arithmetic and counting to 100.  I'll have to check this person's number sense, but I don't think this person has it either.  If this person doesn't have number sense, I guess Semple math would be a good fit?

I do know this person likes educational videos and songs.  According to the mother, she doesn't think this person is picking up on the educational videos.  This person does not like being read to or doing any type of school work.

So what do you guys think?  Is there another type of math program out there that I don't know about for kids with dyscalculia?  I am way out of my element.

Btw, I'm not looking for much progress this school year.  I want this to be a fun math program.  Get this person to enjoy learning again.  Knowing basic math facts would be a bonus.

Thanks for any input.

I don't know much of anything about Semple math but Ronit Bird is not a curriculum, it is remediation for the normal issues seen with students that have dyscalculia.  The ebooks are a good place to start and can be used with a curriculum.  They are not real expensive, either.  The printed books are good, too, and provide lots of hands on learning ideas for a teacher to move a student through to try and solidify number sense, place value, etc. but the books are intense to read through, are written strictly to the instructor, and sometimes need time to tweak out.  I love them but I kind of wish they would be redone with larger print and a bit more hand holding.  Ronit Bird is a good support system.

ETA: I was reading through the Semple Math website.  I like what the author is saying but I am uncertain whether Ronit Bird or Semple Math would work better for you.  Hopefully someone with knowledge can weigh in...

RB teaches for conceptual math understanding and addresses basic subitizing by relying upon manipulatives and games. For multiplication and division, she uses algebraic properties and transitions from manipulatives to pictorials to the abstract math problem. RB also provides alternatives to standard multiplication, subtraction, and division math algorithms.

In your case, I would likely look at Semple because it is more basic and seems to have a proven record of working with ID. From what I understand of Semple, it is picture based and relies upon counting.

Thank you Heathermomster.  That's what I was thinking.  Something basic.

What does ID mean?

I just read about CSMP.  Off to pm Rosie about this.  But if you guys have any insights about this program please feel free to weigh in.

ID = Intellectual Disability

I've looked at Semple but have not used it.  I have used RB for years and before her ebooks.  I suggest you get more input from an actual Semple user.

Yes, I believe this person is ID.  I started reading the pdf you linked Heathermomster, and I believe this person needs to start at the beginning.  As of last Christmas, this person didn't have number sense.  I'm going to assess this person next week.

My assessment is that RB is for people who can do higher level math, but just need additional help with the basic math.  As OneStep said, "RB is remediation for the normal issues seen with students that have dyscalculia".

I think Semple math is for people with ID?

I can't find many people talking about Semple math.  There's a recent thread on it as well with not many responses.

Perhaps I'll start with Semple and then move to RB.

I hope I'm getting this right.
