Has anyone tried Mem press curriculum

Has anyone tried any of the memoria press spec. Needs products?

I really want the copy book and some of the readers. I'd really like the comp/lit guides to go with the readers .

Not sure about any of the other stuff. We are on about roughly a 2nd (low) grade level for their challenging reading to stretch them, but for practice of all phonics (which we need TONS of) the readers would be about 1st gr. Even K too. The readers n guides look good.

 

Anyone used any of it?

If so, thoughts ?

 

I really don't wanna shell out more money without some feedback :/

On their forum, not sure how objective it would be.

I remember someone posting this question maybe on the gen ed board quite a while back.  I vaguely recall some negative feedback but I cannot remember specifics or whether that was multiple negative posters or just one.  Have you tried doing a general search?  You might be able to find the thread...

One-step, whata with all the Chinese posts? It's on every single board. Some were changed to add a university under the Chinese writing, some have gobbledygook.

The oriental characters stuff happens fairly often. It's a spam bot as far as I can tell. The moderators will clear them all out eventually but they come back again within a few days. Annoying but essentially harmless.

There are at least 3 that mention this specific curriculum in the title. Read through those. It might have something helpful for you. I think all three may be from last year so you might ask them for an update.

DD14 went to a part-time Classical school in third grade, where they used MP literature guides. The literature selections were excellent, but I did not like the guides. There was a ton of writing, and the questions were all summarizing plot elements. They weren't questions that inspired thought about the characters or theme, etc. DD had to turn in her written work, or I would have just answered those questions orally and then spent more time just talking about the books. I am not one to say that workbooks are busy work. We use a lot of workbooks in our homeschooling. But these guides were busy work.

 

In our case, DD was not a strong writer, so it took her a lot more time to write those answers out instead of saying them orally. Yet the questions did not lead to a better understanding of the books. She did have great comprehension and didn't need to spend that much time on recounting the plot. Now for a student who needs to review plot details, the questions might help, but I would still choose a different curriculum for that instead, personally. If you have a student with dysgraphia or who is a slow or weak writer but has good comprehension, I think it's not the best choice (personal opinion, of course).

 

Now, I did buy a novel comprehension guide from them a few years later (for A Door in the Wall), and liked it better. MP does have some good materials, IMO, so I'm not criticizing their whole program. I just didn't like those early elementary lit guides.

 

ETA: I didn't use the K and 1st grade books, so take a look at how much writing they require, the kind of questions that are asked, and whether it is appropriate for your student. Perhaps those younger levels are structured differently. My post is about the mid-elementary level (third grade).

Oh. I have something I just remembered. It's so good.

I stumbled on it looming fir reading programs like 3 urs ago.

I typed in ESL reading and...haha. As second language came up.

Anyway tho, it's because if that really good. I wrote down 15 sheets.

I am gonna use it too. I need lots of variety. We do so much practice I dint want em to get bored an i get bored too.

I'm gonna get k and start. The paxe we take is so slow they could do one a day. For real. And have them understand it anyway and that's what I'm trying to accomplish now. Had poor comp. In past. Gets better.

Maturity also plays in that alot too.

...for us anyway.

But hey. I'm happy for 2 pages shared read a day and to at least intro the question. Talk about it. Take some note on the side if the paper of either if them have any ideas...after awhile ile throw em a lifeline n give suggestions.

Show em how to do it.

Practice that for a while...k?

Storygirl, I just saw the part about better options for the MP. What would you use?

If I could find something else more effective ID like to take a look at it .

 

The only mp product I've done is latin with my oldest daughter and logic with both daughter's.

Both weere Cheryl low about when they first came out. Not since then tho.

When my kids were younger, I used phonics programs to teach them to read, but I didn't use a literature program. I just read to them. A lot! I did use Sonlight for K with my oldest (we read way more than what was scheduled), but for my younger three, I didn't follow a reading program -- I just read things to them that I loved, which included many of the Sonlight books, but not all, plus many that were not part of Sonlight. My younger three didn't have the readaloud stamina that my oldest did, and I didn't have as much time, because of the time it took to do my oldest daughter's lessons, but I fed them books along with their lunch every day, and I also read before naps. DH read to them at bedtime.

 

I really believed that just reading to them and talking about the books was sufficient. I didn't want a reading program. I liked adding arts and crafts to our reading by using Literature Pockets. We all loved those.

 

Then we learned through testing that DS12's reading comprehension was poor. He was nine at the time. I switched to CLE's reading program, because I wanted to address the comprehension systematically. Before third grade, though, I think CLE is a learning to read program (phonics), not a comprehension program. And for third grade and up, it is a reading text, not literature. We still read out loud, but our school time reading became more focused.

 

If I could go back in time, I think I would use Writing with Ease at those younger grades for my own family. Along with plenty of readalouds of course!

Writing with Ease sounds like a writing program, but it is narration and dictation. The narration provides early practice in thinking about what one is reading.

Yea. We have always done that too. Read alot of read aloud and phased the lil ones into shared reading when possible.

 

I'm using wwe too. We've only gotton to dictation for spelling words only. A sentence attempt sent them into a spin. :)

I even tried the shortest sentence ever ...Jesus wept. Yea. No. They were ready a few months ago . I can probably use a different sentence now. One we've worked on phonics with.

 

We've always just done heavy phonics and reading. I have the same mindset as you.

 

I do love to throw alot of lit. At them tho. Audio. ( oh boy was VERY grueling at first. But I break the audio chapters up in half now and talk extensively about the text.

And I try to pull a color sheet out per chapter, doesn't always happen tho and still working on details in their drawing. They've come along way in all of that.

 

Love wwe. It was hard for them at first tho. They LOVE it now.

 

I'm gonna go ahead and get the lit guide for SN. I'm going to use it for a grammar source too.

Analyze the sentences they write. ( the answering the questions in complete sentences like wwe does).

 

They will like analyzing their OEN sentences I think. I'm gonna let them use colored pencils for it too. Using the color codes I gave the parts of speech.

I have to get creative with lots of visual stuff here with tons of repetition and one curriculum only has so much practice per concept / p.of SP. That's why we use so many different curriculums. We finish them too. Wwe bk 1 will take awhile tho. I'll probably skip to WW 2 toward the end of bk 1 tho. Spring wm forward lol

I'm just gonna get the lit guide and use the books to it that I already have and get from library what I don't.

I did not read all the responses. We have used MP for a few years and like them but for older grades. We started with the ones that were Arthur, Robin Hood, etc which where a year "ahead" at the time when we did them for her grade. She is a prolific reader. We also did them this past school year (6th grade) with Veritas Press Scholars Academy. We did Fahrenheit 451, Little Women, Lord of the Rings, etc. We also did quite a few of the projects, we had a blast! She weaved a basket forJungle Book, made a terrarium for Around the World in Eighty Days and a cake and icing from scratch for Little Women, etc. I plan on using Excellence in Literature for the 7th grade coming up, but supplementing it with MP.

We like beautiful feet but the MP has the lit student workbooks that seem very cool. You don't have thst with BF. And I'm burn out on reading everything myself and pulling info out of them.

I'm using Level 2 with DS7 this upcoming year, and most of Level C with The Marvelous Flying Marco (4).

DS7 we strongly suspect is dyslexic, but also has a significant amount of fine motor skill and motor issues.

DS4 is classified as severely autistic with an expressive-receptive language delay, but is also highly intelligent (frankly, he more than passes - at almost 100% - the readiness assessment for Level 1, but Cheryl's advice was to start in C because of the language delays).

 

Any specific questions? I have all of Level 2 on hand and most of Level C (except the manual for Level C - I still need to order that, but I'm considering going rogue with Level C since Marco may fly through it). 

 

ETA: Level 2 introduces some Simply Classical exclusives... a writing program, spelling program, and literature program that is exclusively for their special needs programs (so, not the same as the non-special needs levels of MP).

Amiee, I've been sifting through the level 2 SC (SN) and jus noticed that tonite.

The difference in that portion.

 

I thought , gee, mayb we could get the reg Ed stuff.

I'm going to order level 2 payday. So much I want from there.

I had a friend loan me one of the younger levels last year. Of course that's before they use the lit guides and phonics more. Which is good, that age needs that .

 

I am so excited . I'm gonna sneak in haha from payday to payday and get the read aloud and science and math enrichment s. I have some of of the books in our home libray. They've been through 5 kids tho so... Lol

 

I'm gonna have to set them up in those bookshelf's they can see from the front. The shelf is shorter and has the rail in front so you can display them.

 

My boys are so viual and well take way too much practice to get them from the library. Plus, I'm still trying , hoping , and praying NY DS 12 will one day pic uo a book and read it on his own . he knows he's so far behind and is afraid he will never learn.

 

I'm going to get the phonics K supplement too. That one probably first , or if hubby wint have a coronary, both at same time.

 

I told him, it's a complete curric for yr.

 

I live the customize plan. I'm going to get a higher level in math.

 

I've never used rod and staff.

You like it? How is it ? I haven't been to their site yet to see if they offer samples.

I do NOT use their math, so I can't comment on Rod and Staff math. We use Miquon and have for a while now. Like your kiddo, mine is visual.

 

Order the read alouds used. Abebooks or I can give you the name of a woman on FB who will take a list from you and find what she can (she has a small book shop on FB) - she's found most of my books for me.

If your child needs a large amount of repetition, I might suggest CLE math instead... but, we DID get the Rod and Staff review math pages and SC Level 2 does implement fine motor skill work into their math, so I would use their recommendations to that extent.

Our family used Memoria Press for K-3rd and really liked it.  It is rigorous.  The phonics instruction is very thorough and I love their comprehension guides.

Yes, that's where the stickler came in for me. Rigorous.

They have significant challenges, across the board challenges. That's why I was looking at the SN one. We're so all over the place with strenghts and weaknesses .

 

I borrowed..I think it was C from a friend last year but not the entire program.

I love the lit. Guide, was gentle. I want to pull out my old English fir the Thought ful child (cm) and weave that in. (Nostalgia really, used it with my big kids).

 

Sigh. I guess I just need to pick and choose some from lvl2 some from probably C also.

 

We use SM and they do well with it. Math is a strong point, language is where were really weak. Glad to hear good things bout the phonics. I'm going to get the cards. I really liked the look of them.
