Mattress cover for bedwetter?

My boys are getting new beds. We need a really good waterproof mattress cover. The ones I've been buying don't last. THey break, tear, slip off. 
He wets a lot, even through his pull ups. He needs a plasticky one, no cotton padding. 
Any suggestions where I can get one, preferably $30 or less?

I don't have experience with plastic bedcovers except for our home births. For our home births, our midwife advised plastic shower curtains. They work great, even with the potential huge mess of birth. They're super cheap, too. And washable just fine in the machine. Have you considered that?

Yep, the plastic shower curtains are great for this. Cut it to size to fit the bed, then place the fitted sheet on top of it. Or, make it even easier for you and don't use sheets at all. Give your kid a big enough blanket or comforter that he can completely wrap up in, then you only have one piece of bedding to wash every day. Much easier to make the bed too, when all you have to do is throw on the comforter.  We used this strategy for several years. It worked far better than anything else I tried.

 

If you have problems with the shower curtain slipping off, then don't cut it to size, but tuck it in instead.

 

 

ETA:  It's been quite a long time since we did this, but I'm thinking it may have actually been a shower curtain liner. Not sure that it makes a difference, though they might be cheaper.

I've gotten waterproof, cotton type washable pads off amazon, they are very reasonably priced. They just lay underneath the fitted sheet. A few sizes available to choose from. They seemed to work well.

 

I will never again buy cheap fitted, rubbery type mattress covers. They do not breath and are so hot! I used to have one on my bed (DS sleeps with us at times and has an occasional accident), and I would wake up soaked in sweat. They seem to break down too easy with washing.

 

When we buy new mattresses, I always splurge for the expensive waterproof covers, even for my bed. I think they are made of bamboo and are fitted. Breathable and don't leave anyone sweating. They are very, very effective.

When we were dealing with this (pre-teen kid so I sympathize on the Really Wet thing), I used two of these on the bed:

The bottom one had sheet fasteners on it to make sure it didn't pull loose and the mattress was protected even if the top cover slid around.  With these, the kid didn't need sheets at all because these are cotton covers and very breathable.  In the morning, I would strip off the top one and his comforter and toss them both in the wash.   Occasionally I would swap the top and bottom covers to make them last longer.

 

At $25 each, two of them are over your $30 price, but having the breathable ones was totally worth it.  If I had a kid who was a super-flooder, I would consider using those waterproof pads between the two covers as well.

I have definitely have not thought of that. I would think it will slide around a lot. He's a wild sleeper. 

I have a spare liner. I'll give it a try.

We've had good luck with these IKEA ones.  they are a polyurethane laminate (like a diaper cover) with a terry cloth topping to keep from getting too hot and sweaty.  $16.99.

I've never found a single thing that really works. We layer. Lots of layers.

 

We have 2 fitted cotton pads, washable pads, and disposable pads.

 

Rarely am I replacing more than 2 layers, but once in a while it happens.

I layer a regular waterproof mattress pad, one of these, a bottom sheet, then a quilt or blanket. My kids do sleep in pull ups but they link almost every night. Supposedly these will hold up to 300 washes, I'm at about 10 right now so I can't attest to the durability.
