Does anyone else hate getting a haircut???

I dread it. I probably go in every two years and cut it all off. It has been hot and muggy and I need to go in and get it done, but I dread it. I dread the hour of petty conversation. Going to a cheap place would be quicker, but my hair isn't exactly easy, so I have learned I need to go to someone who knows what they are doing and can cut in an actual style. Can anyone else commiserate with me???

I too hate the chit chat. I love my hairdresser, she is very sweet. But when I am sitting one foot from a huge mirror, under bright lights, with my hair plastered to my head and half my makeup washed off I feel like Jabba the Hut sitting there. I just want to have my hair done while I read or relax and avoid any and all eye contact with the mirror.

I hate going to get my hair cut and colored, but more for the time issue than anything else.  Well, also the money.  Whoosh, goes the money… I get my hair cut and colored 3 to 4 times a year, so you can imagine how bad my roots are before I get it done.  I'm due now.  I shoot for going every 3 months, but it usually ends up being 4.  Sigh.  I wish I were brave enough to color myself.

Yes, yes, yes. It seems that every woman I know loves going to get her haircut and spending hours at the salon. I, however, hate it. It feels awkward all around. The small talk, the mirrors, the room full of people. Ugh. I avoid it for as long as possible, even cutting my own bangs (badly) until I just have to go in again.

Not sure which I hate worse - the inane chatter or the terrible haircuts.  Seriously, all I want is cut a few inches off evenly.  I don't want layers or style or anything.  My curls make any "style" they try look stupid anyway.  All it needs is the ability to be put in a pony tail!  Doesn't sound difficult.

So, yes, I'm with you. I dread haircuts.

Totally with you. For me, the worst possible gift anyone could give me would be "a day of beauty." MIL and SIL are so into this - mani, pedi, massage, facial, etc. - and I can think of few things that I would find more torturous. Thankfully, DH has always managed to convince them not to offer this to me.

This does sound horrible.  My husband wanted to get me "a day at the spa" for Mother's Day last year.  I told him I would love a day off, but would not want to waste it doing something so boring.  Instead, I took the day off to go to a bookstore, have a nice brunch (by myself!), and sit at a cafe and read the entire Sunday NY Times.  It was bliss.

I hate it. I go once a year only. Go short and it grows out all year lol. The place near me is all foreigners( I found they don't like chit chat), and cut decent so I keep going back. They do a good job on both mine and my daughter's hair. They understand me fine for instructions , but I struggle with the accent to understand them, so we don't talk. I do wonder what they are all talking about while I am there lol...

I'm not a fan. I do better if I avoid the shampoo because laying back like that stresses me out. I go in with my hair wet. I skip the blow dry, too, because I start to get antsy sitting there for too long. Also, I found someone who doesn't chat. I ask her a few questions to catch up and she asks about my kids; then we move into quietness. She's been my most favorite stylist ever and now we're moving.

I don't like the aftermath -- my hair is super thick and no matter how careful my stylist is I always end up with bits of hair all over me. I try to schedule so I can come straight home and take a shower. And I hate the cost. But beyond that -- no, it doesn't bother me. I go to a small, neighborhood type place where almost everybody knows everybody else (at least a little). So it's a good time to catch up on what's happening in the community. My hair grows incredibly quickly, so I have to have it cut every three weeks. By the fourth week it's getting totally out of control. So I guess it's a good thing I don't mind it too much. ;)

No, I don't mind it. I kind of enjoy the chit chat.  I like learning about people and I try and ask them questions -- then they end up doing most of the talking!  If I don't feel like chatting though (and sometimes I don't!), I close my eyes and pretend I'm half-asleep.

The one thing I don't like at the local salon (where I generally go) is that she is kind of rough with her hands!  When she's washing my hair, it feels like she's yanking out my hair!  I'm sure she can tell that it hurts because I can't help but grimace, but she's always done it that way.

It's the small talk. I don't like the small talk. My sons love going to a woman I know who has a salon out of her house. She's the only employee. And when we go, I have to make small talk then, too. I just want to sit and read a magazine, but that would be rude, being that she's the only other adult in the room.

I think it's because my small talk tends to confuse hair dressers. I don't know why. At least once every time we go, no matter who we go to, they give me a weird look like I've just said something really bizarre. It happens every time. At this point I'm so skittish that I'll say something weird, that it makes me say something weird.

I wish I could just read a magazine.

Speaking of awkward. I hate (hate, hate) when the dental hygenist flosses my teeth. All of them snap that floss into my gums and it hurts a lot. My teeth must be too close together or something. They have to use a lot of pressure to get the floss past the teeth and then it snaps right into the gum.

So the last time I finally said, "That really hurts. Just let me do it," and she did, but she was really confused by the whole thing. Does no one else find that snapping floss into gums that have just been prodded hurts? Am I the only one sitting there wincing in pain from each snap?

Ugh.

My son. But if he doesn't get it done today we are going to need a weed whacker to do the job. Because whoa. Just whoa. The only thing he likes less than haircuts though is having long hair. Rock, hard place.

I just swerve out of the chatting by saying I'm a bit tired or not giving answers that are long enough to engender more questions.

Yes, I find the chatting takes a lot of energy, and I often don't feel up to it.  I also find myself getting weirdly paranoid about my hair.  Plus, just getting the time, and then the cost is significant, I haven't had much luck with cheaper places, they tend to give me a head shaped like a triangle.

I'm with you.  I hate going to the hair salon.  My hair is very very thick and takes forever to dry so I usually tell them not to blow dry it and they give me a hard time about that.  I had the chit chat so I would close my eyes and try to relax.

I've been cutting my hair and dd's hair lately.  I do the ponytail layering technique which works really well for long, thick, slightly wavy but not curly hair.  I've always cut my own bangs so that's nothing new.  I only do the back of it every 3 or 4 months, even doing it myself.

This is me. I hate the time it takes. I love my stylist, she'll do chit chat or just be quiet. But, it takes. so. long.

So I put it off till my roots are screaming. Like right now. Ugh.

One good thing: she does travel styling now, so she'll come to our house. That's a nice bonus.

I have the best deal.  I get my hair cut once a year by my cousin when I am home in the US.  The small talk is actually family gossip/catchup, I take her out to eat after in lieu of payment, and any of her sisters who are free join us in the catch-up.

When I've had to get my hair cut by strangers, I dreaded it.  I am NOT a good small talker.

I hate that I end up looking like a lawn mower ran over my hair nearly every time! Then I have to come home and try to trim it up a bit to make it look decent. I swear we are both speaking English when I tell them what I want done, but apparently, I must be speaking Chinese or something and only hearing myself in English. I tell them I do NOT style, curl, dry with a brush, etc. my hair. I just want to wash it and let it dry and look halfway decent. They nearly always end up "styling" it anyway.  :cursing:

I love getting my hair done.  I hate making appointments of any kind.  It goes better if I make a next appointment when I have one.

I make my next appointment while paying.

As for the chit chat I know the girl who cuts my hair and we talk about our kids, husbands and such.  I like getting out and talking with her.

I don't mind going in, but it's the money I mind spending. Seems like such a waste to me. I'm going this Wednesday with my daughter. I cringe at thinking of the price. I also hate the petty talk. Please, just let me sit in peace, and maybe, I don't know, shut my eyes while you blow dry.

I hate it, too.  I started growing out my hair 5 years ago to donate, but it stopped growing so I haven't had it cut since then.  It's not long enough to donate, but it's a good length for me.  I don't know if I'll ever go back to the salon again until I eventually color my hair (almost 49 and no gray yet).

The petty conversation is one reason I did not remain a massage therapist. I can make as much money waiting tables as doing massage and the guests talk to EACH OTHER.

Wait, people chit chat during massages? I don't. I just close eyes and enjoy. I would be seriously annoyed if the MT tried to converse with me.

I also don't talk during pedicures. I usually bring my iPad and read. I do talk during haircuts but the girl who cuts my hair is a friend so we spend the time catching up. I've seen her cut other people's hair without conversation though.

YES! I HATE making any and every kind of appointment, even if I want to do something. It has been 9 months now and I want it cut and although I don't enjoy getting it cut the major thing stopping me is making the stupid appt. The same thing stopping me from getting dd1 braces, which is horrible on my part. UGH.

And . . . my aversion to salons just paid off!  I came home yesterday after buying myself a new violin, and had to admit that I had also picked up a gorgeous (expensive) new bow made of reclaimed pernambuco, which had not been part of the plan.  My husband said that was absolutely fine, as overall I was "very low-maintenance" and didn't insist on new cars, new jewelry, and frequent salon visits.

I just hack the ends of my straight hair off myself. It's shoulder length and I always wear it twisted up with a claw clip, so who cares if it isn't perfectly even? within a couple of weeks it grows out and the unevenness isn't obvious anyhow.

I am in the don't want to waste the time or money camp.

I totally get it. I worked as a receptionist (ahem, "client coordinator") while I was in college at a large and very upscale salon in a big city. The thing is that many people providing hair services are chatty because they are kind of expected by most people to be chatty. Most people are uncomfortable with silence. So if you are just upfront about not wanting to chat- once you've discussed what you want for your cut  - most people will happily oblige and not think you are weird /rude. I might say something like, "just so you know, I have a bunch of kids at home, and I'm totally brain fried, so this is my only chance for silence and I'd love to take advantage of it!" Not every hair person is a huge extrovert, so it can be a nice change for them to just focus on what they are doing instead on having to simultaneously cut and keep up a conversation.

Another idea if you are calling a nicer / larger salon would be to ask the person making the appointment if there is someone who is a little quieter - maybe say you are looking for a "quiet, soothing experience" and want to find a stylist who is more conducive to that. Sometimes men will ask for stylists like this so its not unheard of.  I know that might feel weird but if you are calling around looking for a new person to see, it might be worth it. Especially if you are paying a ton for a haircut, why not?

Also just to add - I find that Aveda salons in general tend to be quieter and have softer lighting, if you are bothered by that. They do tend to be pricey, especially on the west coast and larger cities, but it might be a nicer experience overall.

I don't mind the chitchat. Between the kids, 2 dogs, the traffic, and the weather, there's ALWAYS something to find common ground on/complain about.

I avoid haircuts because the lady I usually go to is really rough on my hair! When she combs out the tangles after a wash, she starts at the top and just rips the comb through. (Start at the ends and work up, lady!!) I've even asked her if she wants me to do it because she starts at the top every time. I like her coloring and cut but my head is so tender after an appointment with her...and I'm a redhead which doesn't that mean I'm extra tough handling pain??

Today my hair appointment was with someone else and surprise, my head is not sore! And the chitchat was much more enjoyable.

Absolutely. I go about once a year. I tell them, "I like it to hit around my collarbone. My hair is so thick and straight that it doesn't look good with layers; they make it look bushy. I often end up with long pieces sticking out the bottom because it shapes up unevenly when it dries, so look out for that." And almost without fail, the stylist gives me massive layers and I have long pieces sticking out the bottom.

Last week I went in to a Regis salon and got about 8" cut off. The lady cut my hair mostly dry, just spritzing a couple of times. She also cut it without holding it in her hand. I had my glasses off so I just went along with it. Finally she had me put my glasses on and turned me around so I could see the back - it was HORRIBLE! She had cut one layer straight across about 4" shorter than the main length. The bottom was uneven, longer on the sides, and there was no blending. I told her I wasn't happy with it because the layers were way too severe, and told her to try to blend it by point cutting. So she did that for a while and told me that it would look better after I washed & dried it. I paid $32 for the cut and added a $5 tip, hoping she was right.

Well, of course it didn't look better. It still looked awful. My dh could have done a better cut. Who gave that girl a license?!?! The next day I went to a local salon and told them I needed a miracle. The girl there did her best to cut it into a bob (taking a couple inches off the main length) and blended & thinned the bottom to neaten it up, but she couldn't do anything about the blunt, short layers. I paid her another $30 for the haircut and a $7 tip. So my goofy haircut cost me a total of $74. My hair isn't wavy enough to hide anything so I have to ride it out for a couple of months and then get it trimmed again into a proper bob. Luckily I now have someone I trust.

Where I used to live, I could go to a salon run by Cantonese women. They understood how to cut my straight hair! And they only charged $10 so I always gave a huge tip.

It's not so much that I hate getting it cut as I hate the inevitable disappointment when I get it cut.  It doesn't matter what they do, my hair ends up looking exactly the same, just a different length -- it's always very fine, poker straight hair letting go of any attempt to curl or volumize it.  It's looks exactly the same as it has since I was 12 years old.  So disappointing.
