Tanaqui
Oh boy. One or two? Not happening, I just can't narrow it down like that, but I can completely spam you with book links! Hold on. I'll edit this. Titles in italics are series. The Jumbies - a bit scary The Ear, the Eye, and the Arm - a bit scary and long The Penderwicks The Nine Pound Hammer Clementine The True Meaning of Smekday Alvin Ho Ramona the Pest Zahrah the Windseeker The All-of-a-Kind Family The Year of the Dog Un Lun Dun Gregor, the Overlander - definitely scary Bo at Ballard Creek Earthsea Seaglass Summer The Exiles One Crazy Summer - touches on some more serious issues, you should definitely pre-read The Boys Start the War The Year of the Book The Toothpaste Millionaire How Tia Lola Came to Stay - short Mars Evacuees - touches on a few serious subjects When Hitler Stole Pink Rabbit - a very mild book, considering the context. This is technically a series, but the other two books are not written for children. Pickle The Great Greene Heist Gabi, Lost and Found - discussions of child neglect, but nothing seriously bad happens The Misadventures of the Family Fletcher Bud, Not Buddy and companion novel The Mighty Miss Malone A Year Down Yonder Bobby Vs. Girls Unusual Chickens for the Exceptional Poultry Farmer - harder to read aloud, as it's an epistolary novel, but worth it Dragonwings The Inquisitor's Apprentice - the series hasn't finished and I hate waiting around So You Want to Be a Wizard - I read this book at this age, and then accidentally destroyed my copy and it was out of print for years so I couldn't get a new copy. A Face Like Glass - complex vocabulary Dash Ambassador Hammer of Witches - deals with Columbus and the Inquisition, so you may wish to pre-read Strawberry Hill The Birchbark House - has a smallpox epidemic Where the Mountain Meets the Moon The Conch Bearer - the first book is definitely the weakest The Last of the Really Great Whangdoodles The Year of the Boar and Jackie Robinson - another short one Tales of a Fourth Grade Nothing The Dalemark Quartet - can be a little hard to get into, but worth it Starry River of the Sky Heart of a Samurai Savvy Al Capone Does My Shirts Princess Academy That should do for now. If I think of any more, I'll make a new post :) Remember, your ideas and mine of what's appropriate for a third grader may differ. I don't know your child or your family at all! The onus is on you to pre-read. Edited June 28, 2016 by Tanaqui

Ellie
I don't know about third grade, but when my dc were 8ish, they enjoyed Understood Betsy, Heidi, and Lassie Come-Home. I usually read books I had read, or looked up books by the authors I was familiar with, or searched the stacks at the library. :-) Here's the !000 Good Books list.
Rachel
I read these to my 8 year old this summer: Peter Nimble and His Fantastic Eyes (the audiobook is fabulous!) Where the Red Fern Grows We listened/read many of the Ramona books by Beverly Cleary but he thinks they are too girlish. He has enjoyed Henry Huggins in the past though. happymom4
The Mysterious Benedict Society (series)...you're welcome ;). What I love about the series is that its a cool adventure mystery featuring children who are incredibly gifted in various ways. I also love that there are multiple puzzle type situations that your 3rd grader can try to figure out along with the characters in the book. I can't describe it in a way that does it justice.

Farrar
I think The Great Brain and The Saturdays (well, really The Four-Story Mistake, the sequel) were the two biggest hits of our 3rd grade year.
