Grammar for elementary and middle school ages

Recommended Posts

I think I posted this in the wrong section, so I reposted it where it should go. Sorry!

Hi all

I'm curious if anyone would like to share their experience with grammar for elementary and middle school aged kids. I have five children ages 11 down to 2, and I am not one of those people who is amazing at spending a lot of time one-on-one with each kid for every subject. When I do, I am doing school with them all day and we rarely get to do anything else! So, I am looking for something that either doesn't take a long time each day, or something my kids can do independently. I have used First Language Lessons in the past and truthfully, I loved it. However, it seemed to take quite a while with each child. I have had IEW Fix it! suggested (I'm trying their writing in the fall as this is an area my kids need more direction in and we have not had good results with some of the other programs we've used - writing is our toughest area!) and Winston Grammar suggested. Does anyone have any thoughts about either of these programs? Or any others? Oh, I also had Easy Grammar suggested! Also, for those of you who used FLL, what did you use once your kids were in 5th through middle school?

Thanks for any input!
Laura

HOw about combining pairs or even three kids in FLL? FLL isn't really super age-specfiic.  There's not much about it that would make it only usable for one grade.  That's my first suggestion.

Next would be Abeka Grammar.  All that repetition, page after page, year after year...it works.  And it's pretty much self teaching, you just use the Answer Key or TM (I forget the setup) to check answers

I love The Sentence Family for elementary grammar. We tried other programs, but this by far was the most fun and effective. You can do all your kids together, and it is about 14 lessons I think. There is almost no writing involved. It covers sentence types, parts of speech, and the basics of diagramming.

Then use a regular middle school grammar when they get to that age and can work independently.
