SemiSweet
Just looking for some advice here. I have signed ds up for the Saxon Algebra 1 class through WTMA, he is going into 8th this year. He's neither good nor bad at math, he can be careless sometimes but he's pretty average overall. We are currently working our way through Math Mammoth Pre-algebra. He should finish it or be very close by the time the class starts. However, I'm debating on sending him through pre-a one more time. He took his readiness test (from WTMA site): http://www.hmhco.com/~/media/sites/home/education/global/pdf/placement/mathematics/k-12/saxon-math-homeschool/shs_upper_placement.pdf?la=en And he got 100%. BUT there seem to be two other readiness tests, one of which he got about 50% on and the other he hasn't taken. I'm completely stumped, I do not want to force him ahead of he isn't ready but I do not want to hold him back if he is. This is the other readiness test that he did not take. He does not know most of that, it's completely different than the test on the WTMA site. http://www.sonlight.com/uploads/saxon_a1_placement.pdf Advice? What would you do? Thanks! OneStepAtATime
I would assume that the readiness test for WTMA would be accurate for testing whether he is ready for their particular program. Different math programs have different scopes and sequences. Usually, all the same things are covered in the end. They are just presented a bit differently and in a bit different order. Since he passed the WTMA readiness test with a 100% he should do fine with the WTMA program. If he were switching to Sonlight then no, he would not be ready, he would need to be exposed to the material he doesn't know yet. This is true for any math program. When switching, you need to give a placement test since different math programs deal with the order to present math concepts differently. You want your student placed correctly into the new math program even if it means going back a bit. Since your child did well on the WTMA readiness test, and he will be taking a WTMA math course, he should be fine. :) Edited June 27, 2016 by OneStepAtATime
fourisenough
The WTMA placement test you linked above looks like an actual placement test; the Sonlight test linked above clearly says at the top of it: "Final Exam". I wouldn't expect a student who hasn't done a particular program to score well on their final exam. I'd probably call Sonlight for clarification. It was much longer and more difficult than the WTMA test.

Thank you, that was my thought too, but when I search Saxon algebra placement test that's what comes up, it's really weird that there would be 3 different placements tests for that one program. I'll try calling, I know if that's the correct test then he needs to stay in pre-a another year.
