Accountability Thread: 6/26-7/2

Almost July. By my calculations I have 83 days of unbearable heat left to endure before autumn relieves the suffering. Sigh. We hit 100 yesterday, it hasn't rained, but still manages to be as humid as a swamp outside.

I'm taking most of this week off from school. We have a follow up appointment with the cat's eye specialist this week, and a trip up-state to see a historic spot, so I'm just going to finish out the Latin lesson and the math book, take a spelling test and finish the reading through the Merchant of Venice and call it good.

Today's schedule:

Latin-workbook, review grammar, prepare for quiz

Math-one boy needs to finish his test and do corrections

Language-finish the play for reading, take a spelling test over last week's words

For me-Writing and Housekeeping. Maybe a nap.

DD is visiting my aunt this weekend, so she's getting plenty of sunshine and outdoor time. DH and I went fishing this morning. I hadn't been in ages, and we had a pretty good time. He loves fishing, and has been asking me to go, but his friends usually want to go WAY more than I do, so I let him take them instead. This time, most of them had already made plans. We caught 15 fish, but let most of them go (a couple were used for bait) because I didn't want to have to clean them.

This week DD has the first of 2 clinics to get ready for Junior Olympics, so she'll be putting in an extra 4 hours at the gym. Everything else is plugging along.

We have been on summer break for 5 weeks now and have 3 more to go. We are moving in a little less than 2 weeks, which leaves me a week to get stuff unpacked before we start back up.

I've spent some time on this break reflecting on this past year. All the kids made forward progress, which I am happy about, but I feel that if I had been better prepared and more consistent the year would have been more successful. I went into this past year too laid back, too relaxed and have ended up unsatisfied with the results. Surely there has to be a happy medium between rigid and relaxed? I'm going to try to find it this year. As a result I have done much more prep work this summer for the coming year, hoping that it will be beneficial later. We shall see!

This morning the kids and I have a taekwondo class, then a quick run to the grocery store, then home to do some more packing and some more prep for school. And we might go swimming this evening. Or we might stay home. Both sound good!

Good morning! Nothing, we have nothing going today, not even our music lesson. Of course we're going to practice the keyboard and do a bit of reading, the oldest will do his math lesson and that's it. I will do some laundry and some other things around the house.

Bzymama23, I know what you mean about going into the year unprepared, I've done it the last two years and have even disappointed with what was accomplished. You would think I would've learned from the first year right? Well, this year I'm most certainly going to do things differently. I will do as much prep work as possible before the start of our year.

We're back from our long weekend! Laundry going, slow cooker going (chicken, buy one get one free??!! I saved 10 bucks!!!) coolers cleaned, car cleaned out. DD is working on math right now (happily, too, I might add.) Ds is playing with K'nex and baby is napping. I feel very pleased at the moment and am trying to savor it before the next disaster strikes. :p

Another thing that is making me happy is dropping everything but math. I am just done. Sick of forcing it. Sick of arguing. Done. Done. Done. I don't want to be burned out (or dd to be either) before next school year even starts. We need a break. She wants the training wheels off her bike (finally!!!! I've learned this is a kid you cannot push. It has to be her heartfelt desire or things will not happen.) She wants to go swimming every day. She wants a summer break, really and I don't blame her. Plus, she is a great reader and we read for pleasure around here daily, so I'm not worried about that. Her language arts issues all surround writing and I have a plan for working on improving in that area this coming school year. Such a relief to let it all go. Math alone is totally doable with our hectic summer schedule.

Bzymama- you found a place!! I hope you like it and your family will be happy there. :)

In looking at my planner yesterday evening, I realized we have appointments for every day this week except Tuesday and I didn't have a date set yet for my little babysitting charge. So I called her daddy super quick and said bring her in the morning, tomorrow's my day! She's here now cuddling on the couch watching Little Einsteins.

Math and piano practice for dd today. She is loving geometry and I'm so glad she is having fun with math right now.

Planning for next school year is on the horizon for me. Mid July our schedule slows down through August. So I am going to order my homeschool planner and start planning! Anyone know how long I can expect a Rainbow Resource order to take? I thought I read on the site my order qualified for priority mail rather than the book rate but maybe what takes so long is on their end filling orders. I may just grab the planner at Mardel.

Have a great day everyone!

We have an open book Latin quiz set for sometime today. I've got writer's meeting tonight and want to revise the chapter that I figure everyone will want to hear, but am forcing myself to leave it alone. I know what I want to do with it, but it would be better for me to have another set of ears listen in and see if they catch the same things that are bothering me. Instead I'm going to continue working on my through-line for the middle section of the novel and refine it so that I'll have a plan for revising.

Other than that, I just have the usual housekeeping to do.

Critter- how's kitty doing today?

We have a piano lesson today since we had to miss yesterday, math and reading. We got a used Flashmaster in the mail yesterday and my youngest is loving playin with it, lol. Laundry and a work out will make up the rest of the day, maybe some planning for next year.

Critter- how's kitty doing today?

She got a good report from the specialist yesterday. She's still tearing a lot and that makes it hard for her to see. She doesn't like that much, but is eating well and begging for lap-sitting time.

This week the girls have music and art camp at church. We're trying to do some school afterwards. Yesterday I fought with DD1 for an hour to do one exercise in Singapore 1B. She said she knew how to do it, but just wouldn't. DH finally managed to get her to do some math when he made up a story about fairies including a map. Today I have books to pick up at the library. Hopefully the girls will like the books. It's so sad that my girls would prefer to learn on the computer then book and paper. We are in the 21st century.

So happy to hear that! I hate it when pets and little ones are hurting or sick.

I got no planning and no packing done today. Instead we went and helped my mom, she injured her knee on Sunday and needed minions (lol, my kids) to do her bidding for the day. She will be having a hard time getting around for several days so we will go over again on Thursday to help her get the house ready for out of town family coming in for the 4th. Ran the dog to the vet late this afternoon. Ballet this evening for DD. Everyone is in bed except me and the house is quiet! I think I'm going to go work on my plans for a bit!

Busy day Wednesday. I did get out of that dinner, woohoo!

Yesterday was a busy day too. Dd had a big math project that ate up a bunch of time but she enjoyed it so it was worth it. Baby had a checkup which took forever for some reason.

Today, we're done with lessons except for piano practice. Packing for another long weekend away and dh wants to leave 30 minutes after he gets home from work so I gotta run and finish packing!

Critter-how was the field trip?

It was good. We enjoyed the ghost town, then DH and I parked ourselves in lawn chairs near a little creek and watched the boys play in the river with their boats. There wasn't a soul out there for a good hour or more, which was nice.

Today we finished the official curricula for history and science, so I'll just have DD read books to cover them until the new school year officially starts. I've got a couple of Landmark books for history, and the Quark Chronicles Zoology on its way. We're plugging along with everything else, plus all the tumbling.
