lexi Posted June 23, 2016 Share Posted June 23, 2016 (edited) I have mastitis. I'm utterly miserable. And I'll tearfully admit that I loathe breastfeeding. I feel so guilty that I hate it this much. But I do. With each baby I've had problems with plugged ducts and other weirdness. And I've tried lots of things to help. Whatever. So I went to urgent care yesterday and was prescribed Keflex (think that's how it's spelled). I take it 4 times a day for 10 days. I started it yesterday and took 3 doses throughout the day. So today is day 2. I'm having less pain and fewer body aches today and I think my fever is gone. So that's good. However now I'm having different symptoms. I'm super dizzy. I'm nauseous. I am sweating profusely. And I mean profusely! I have a bad headache. And I'm having stomach cramps. I read that these can be side effects. Ohh and I'm trying to take it with food. What do I do? I was told this was an antibiotic that is less likely to cause stomach issues. I feel awful though! I can't do 10 days of this. I'm about to go on vacation next week. I don't want to be switched to a different antibiotic because I'm fearful that one will be worse. Why is this so terrible? I'll take advice or commiseration. I'm sitting in bed crying as I nurse the baby because standing up to wash the dishes made me feel woozy. And despite the fact that the AC is set on 71 and I have two fans going in my room, I'm still sweating. Guest Posted June 23, 2016 Share Posted June 23, 2016 I would call the doctor and report the symptoms. You might be having an allergic reaction. I am highly allergic to Keflex, but the allergy didn't manifest until my 30's. I am so sorry you are going through this. I will honestly say I would throw in the BF towel, get some formula and feel better and start enjoying my baby. Hope you feel better soon. I'd call it in & see if they can switch you to something else. have you had a good consultation with an IBCLC to help you resolve your mastitis & prevent recurrence? zoobie Posted June 23, 2016 Share Posted June 23, 2016 I'd call. That could be an allergic reaction. Are you taking Kefir or any probiotics? Watch for yeast in you and thrush in the baby. Thrush hurts like the dickens. Mastitis sucks. I had it a few times with my oldest, but lecithin worked to keep it at bay. (Azithromycin - bonus is that it is only taken 5 days, and in some cases, two days). Breastfeeding was really, really awful for me too. You are not alone. Tap Posted June 23, 2016 Share Posted June 23, 2016 I'm a pharmacy technician. I would absolutely call the md. There may be another antibiotic you can take that you body handles better. Sometimes the best options for the infection are not the best for the person taking it. While in the shower my throat started to feel weird and scratchy and I realized that I was probably having some type of allergic reaction. I took some Benadryl and called the urgent care back. They refused to prescribe me a different non-sulfa antibiotic and they refused to see me again. They insisted I go to the hospital. Sigh. I could breathe fine and I have several Epi pens in the house. I called my hubby home from work and he took me to see our family doctor. He gave me an antibiotic that I'm supposed to take for a week. No more Keflex for me. And no more sulfa drugs either! Ever! I felt so dizzy and nauseous and horrible. So I have new meds and I'm going to curl up and watch a movie. And my hubby is working from home tomorrow to make sure I'm ok. And I will keep breastfeeding but I will also keep hating it. Sad. I know. But I have 3 kiddos with dairy allergies so I'm terrified to give my babies formula ever. And I won't use soy. So that leaves me with breastfeeding (I can be dairy free). And yes I'll be taking probiotics too. So hopefully I'll start feeling better this weekend. What a yucky day! Thanks for all the advice and kind words! I'm glad you caught the allergic reaction in time and that you are on the road to recovery. You are such a good mom! Going through all this speaks volumes of the sacrificial love and devotion you have for your kids. Breastfeeding was so incredibly difficult for me, but I'm so glad I persevered. Now that I am a decade past no more babies, I look back and remember that precious time of nursing as the highlight of the baby years. Crazy, I know! I had mastitis with all three of my babies, like clockwork at about 3 weeks - all the symptoms of a bad case of flu plus painful nursing, exhaustion, and out of control hormones.
