Dyslexia, Lindamood Bell Centers, Seeing Stars, etc.

Recommended Posts

A friend of mine's son just completed Kindergarten at PS, but is looking to homeschool him next year.  She took him to a Lindamood Bell Center for testing and they found out that he has symbol imagery issues.... he can't retain more than 2 letters but for language, he is at the 2nd/3rd grade level.  They suggested this super duper expensive program to help him.

She found out that she can buy the "Seeing Stars" program and kit herself, rather than spend $20k for the center to do the work.

She's wondering:

1) Is the Lindamood Bell assessment enough or should she do the neuropsych eval/testing as well?

2) Also, does anybody here recommend the Seeing Stars kit? She's willing to go to a two day training as well.  Or are there other programs out there that are just as good?  http://lindamoodbell.com/program/seeing-stars-program

Thanks in advance for any/all advice.

I know others have used Seeing Stars effectively.  I would highly encourage her to seek an eval through a neuropsychologist to get the big picture.  As for using a Linda Mood Bell center, some employees are highly trained.  Others have very little actual training or experience.  If she can get some training for herself she might be better off trying to implement the program at home.

I would seek out the neuropsychologist eval first, and probably a vision evaluation with a developmental optometrist listed on the COVD website.

I think your friend could successfully use Seeing Stars (or LiPS - love LiPS!). I wouldn't take LMB's recommendation without an outside evaluation though. They may not be fully honest when it comes to a "diagnosis" - because they want to make MONEY! I'm not saying they're not good, because for some people they are great, but they are really expensive and in it to make money.

I think she should get an outside eval + buy the book/kit, and save a ton of money while still getting a high-quality evaluation.

  • 4 weeks later...

I LOVE everything LMB, well everything I've used so far.

We have the entire gammit of iasues over here. So far, it has been the only thing to help my boys with a boat of issues.

We use:

Visualizing verbalizing

Seeing stars I have but have only recently started to implement it cuz we were going to be tested and wanted a true picture.

Lips, same with lips tho. Have only used it very recently for same reason.

I can't tell you how v/v tho helped my boys accross curriculum. We talked about and practiced visualizing everything. Number ( I'm going to buy cloud 9 their math manual too).

Their products IMO are one of a kind and extremely effective .

I would go to the NP tho and get testing started. It's always good to have. Helps dicipher issues , know what needs to be focused on ,WTC.

Either way tho, with nt kids I believe LMB products a hugely beneficial .

For us, had breakthrough s we probably would have never had .

They are that unique and good IMO.

Good luck

LiPS is really good. My friend who is an ed therapy student (or maybe she just graduated? I'm not sure) really likes Seeing Stars and recommends starting it towards the end of LiPS.

Here is a thread with info on what materials someone would need to make if he/she had a copy of the Seeing Stars manual and not the full kit.
