Prairie Home Companion/Chris Thile

Recommended Posts

Does anyone else here listen to Prairie Home Companion with Garrison Keillor?  GK is retiring this year, and Chris Thile will be the new host starting mid-October.  Chris Thile was homeschooled and sometimes mentions that.  Mostly, it makes me cringe when he does.  If I remember correctly, once he said that he was homeschooled and that meant that he read a lot of Hardy Boys and played a lot of video games.  Eek!

Here's the latest mention:

Richmond is a Hard Road to Travel

Gotta admit he's a talented musician.

Just FYI.  He grew up near where we live (western KY).

His family is respected locally, and he was legitimately homeschooled!

They were involved in the local hs group.

No worries.

Be proud.  And yes, enjoy his sense of humor, please!

He has never wanted to fit into a stereotypical box.

(Don't have good bandwidth now, so couldn't watch the youtube.)

Wonderful news! It'll still be a fabulous show.

Thile was hs'ed; I knew his mother and heard all about how he learned and grew at home. His curriculum was sooo not Hardy Boys and video games. LOL They are a well-educated, well-read and well-traveled family.

Yes. I knew her on another board. Fantastic family.

To be fair, my DS8 is homeschooled and probably half of his free time is spent either playing video games (grandma is staying with us for the summer and she brought her Wii) or reading Hardy Boys (we own every book).

He seems to be fine :)

I like Garrison Keillor's voice, though - not interested in another host, tbh.

That's funny because I recall Keillor mentioning homeschooling in a derisive manner a couple of times. I have listened to apHC off and on for years. We've seen Keillor twice, the last time just a couple years ago. Have you seen the movie? I thought it was wonderful. I am looking forward to the new PHC.

Whew! Thank goodness.

I love PHC but haven't listened recently. I'll remember to tune back in now.

It is called A Prairie Home Companion. It came out in 2006 directed by Altman. It is a fictional account of the last broadcast. The story is quirky and rather surreal. I think it is def for adults though I can't remember exactly what wasn't suitable for younger ones. I remember being quite charmed by it.

As big fans of his old band, Nickelcreek, we were super happy when Chris Thile was named as the replacement for GK! It is a bit different and will take some getting used to. I'm glad to hear that the homeschooling stuff truly was just a joke. I have a feeling that'd be the kind of thing my 7 year old son will say when asked about his homeschool experience someday. Not because it's true, but because he really does spend an inordinate amount of time reading and goofing off outside compared to kids at brick and mortar schools. He learns fast so he breezes through actual assignments in a couple hours. Chris Thile definitely has a sense of humor, I wouldn't take his jokes as a negative on homeschooling or anything :)
