MEP secondary

Hi.  I know Lewellma uses this but not if anyone else does.  If we started MEP with 7 (which is supposed to be an entry point) would we have to do 7/8/9 and then AOPS PA or would we just do some of the levels?  He may never want AOPS of course but he needs more challenge and to go a bit faster without feeling like he is doing too much (afterschooling only).  We have been using MM topic books but it is a bit of a grind whereas he has done the first 2 units of MEP interactive at a rate of one a day.

Your child chould start AOPS pre-algebra without doing any of the MEP secondary program.

Prealgebra topics are covered in MEP years 7 and 8.  Algebra 1 topics are covered in years 8 and 9.  Year 9 also covers some algebra 2, geometry, trigonometry, and statistics topics.

The MEP Yahoo Group has an 'Upper Level Placement' file.

I did wonder but he just turned 9 and he has never had to work at maths in his life.  I afterschool to try and make up for the lack of maths instruction at school but I have never managed to find that spot where the work challenges without pushing him too far.  Maybe we could do level 7 them mix level 8 and 9 with alcumus PA then take it from there.  The NZ maths sequence is more like the English one though.

My kids used AoPS prealgebra with MEP GCSE. There was too much they already knew in MEP 7/8/9 to make it worth pairing. My kids started at 8. You can always shelved AoPS and/or MEP if he is not ready and come back later.

My youngest who is stronger in visual-spatial did the last few chapters first for aops prealgebra. Then went back to chapter 1.
