Why I stay up too late:

I stay up too late when I need/want to be sociable - like when company is over (or we're visiting people) or there's an event we're staying up for.

I need tons of caffeine to be able to do so, but it tends to be worth it for those times.  It doesn't change what time I'll naturally get up in the morning, so I'll be sleep deprived half way through the next day.  It's nice when I can nap to catch up.  If not, more caffeine.

I get up at 7am, go to work at 9am (6 days a week) and am in a full run until 7-8pm most days.

7pm till 10pm is getting everyone fed and settled for the night (not always very peaceful with dd9).

10pm till midnight is when I do research and rest my body and soul. I have 2 kids with health issues so I spend no less than an hour a day researching different ideas or treatments. Being up after everyone goes to their rooms, is when I can finally rest.

Ha! Well, it's after 2 a.m. now and I'm still up eating cookie dough and watching House of Cards (which is not even a show I really watch--it's just what was on when DH went to bed!). I'm the same way; I just need the solitude, and this is the only time I get it. The only problem is that now that I'm older, I don't handle the loss of sleep very well anymore. It's a dilemma!

What about YOU?? :bigear:

I like the peaceful, still house,  which isn't quite the same thing as "solitude." Now that my kids are grown and mostly gone, I get a fair amount of alone time, but it's usually while I'm doing other things or while things are happening around me.

Only once it gets late enough that my husband is already asleep (and my son, too, if he's home) and the dog is dozing (instead of doing her usual frantic evening round of "Play with me! Refill my food bowl! Take me outside!") and none of the neighbors are talking outside or working in their garages or playing music or whatever can I really just "be" for long enough to unwind and settle.

Then, of course, there are nights like last night, when I finally drift off to sleep. . . only to wake up following a stress dream and wind up not being able to doze off again for three hours. Now that it's light and my husband will be waking up and moving any minute, the whole concept of more sleep is pretty much a lost cause. I won't be drowsy again now until mid-afternoon while I'm at work.

And then the whole cycle will start over again.
