What have you used after Treasured Conversations?

Recommended Posts

We're just about to wrap up Treasured Conversations here (with my 3rd grader) and I'm at a bit of a loss looking for the next thing. This program has been wonderful and a great fit for us, so something that builds on writing in a similar direction would be great! I'd love to hear suggestions from those of you a step or two (or ten) ahead of us.  Thanks in advance.

Hmm, we did a whole hodge-podge of things in 4th grade after TC, but most consistently we used WWE 3 (she loves dictation and tolerates summaries) and did quite a lot of Nature notebooking and animal report writing in the Sassafrass Science logbook (a la TC reports), and cursive copywork (she loves copywork). We've most recently been doing poetry, reading and writing.

Hi Rose,

We finished WWE2 this year, and are planning to do a combo of TC, WWE3, CAP WR, and Bravewriter online for the next two years. Do you think mixing them together is a good plan, or would you do these in any specific order? WWE2 was no problem for him this year (in 1st, he will be in 2nd by age next year). Thanks!

I think that they are all great options, and I wouldn't worry about what order to do them in. They each have different strengths/foci and will give different benefits, so mixing them together is an ideal plan from my POV.  It's also necessary around here, dd tends to get bored easily. Right now she's loving WWE, but if she had to do a whole year of it? No way.  My strategy with her has been to have several writing programs going, and give her the choice of which one to do any given day. They all meet my goals, and giving her the choice makes her happy, increases buy-in and her engagement/investment, so it's a win-win for me.  For a super compliant kid that wouldn't be such an issue, but it's been a necessity with dd2.

My kids were older when they did TC, so one moved onto WWS1 and another into W&R's Narrative 2. Neither one is enamored of their writing program after really enjoying TC. (Well, they enjoyed the first part with the Bushy stories immensely!)

They are both doing SOTW4 this year and have to do outlines & write-from-outlines as part of it. Eldest, my writing-phobic child who didn't do TC, is constantly amazed at their lengthy, descriptive, and coherent summaries from history class (due to their work with TC last year & the fact that neither is writing-phobic).

My WWS1 child will be moving onto an online writing class next year. The younger W&R Narrative 2 child will probably do some sort of a vintage writing text that can be found on Google books. (I almost signed her up for the online WWS1 class, but I think I'll wait one more year for that.)
