Would you make your dd do math club or let them decide?

Recommended Posts

We have a wonderful math club, run by a VERY amazing, experienced, joyful, homeschool mom.  The club is well run.

Next year my dd will have Clay Class, Art Class, an afternoon at the library, and possibly a morning co-op and possibly Sports Day or swim lessons.  My son will be attending math club in the morning.

My dd started the year getting 2 or 3 on her MOEMS and ended the year getting 2 or 3. So, no major improvement or amazing progress. She has always been math-capable and has always done ok.  We supplement with Zacarro's Challenge Math and she does well with that too. She has ZERO desire to go into a math, engineering or medical field. and I am very sure she will not change her mind on that.

It costs me 150 per year, plus about $10 per month for gas, and time wise it costs me an hour and a half every other week.  So it's not a huge commitment.

However, My daughter does not like it.  She does not hate it and she really likes the teacher/leader.  But overall she just feels like it's not worth her time and effort. She has a little anxiety sometimes, sitting still in the hot quiet room doing math for an hour...it's definitely a challenge to be in the class.  She doesn't really prefer any of the girls or boys there.  There is one girl she kind of enjoys but that girl is 2 years younger and as my dd matures, that age gap is a little difficult.  In her particular age group the Math club kids are intense Type A girls....completely utterly her opposite.

I let my DS10 drop math circle after a term in 2014 because he was bored and not benefitting. It wasn't a good fit. He ask to sign up for the aops amc8 class recently so I signed him up.

I would let her drop and use the time elsewhere.

I've had two in Math Olympiad this year and they will continue next year.

In your shoes I'd let her drop it. You can easily use the MOEMS books at home without the competitions if you want.
