What curriculum do you suggest for these grades? I would like it to be something they can do together. We would be on the ancients again. I feel like I have gone through all the options. I know about Mystery of History, Truthquest I am using now and not really enjoying. I have used Story of the World up to vol. 3. I don't need anything expensive.

I'm using it now for grammar stage, but many say it is best suited to logic stage. It is basically a schedule that will include various possible spines/reference volumes, readers for different age levels including 5+ for you, a family read-aloud, map and timeline suggestions, and writing ideas. It is a wonderful rich course, but it is not exactly "pick up and go". You would be investing in some great books or would need to use your library extensively. You can see samples at Biblioplan.net.

Biblioplan can be used for any of the four-year cycles. It plans readings etc. for young kids, middle elementary and 5th and up. I used it with various grades, including 8th (we were in the most recent year of the cycle, and B. makes Hakim's Story of US a primary text, along with Kingfisher History Encyclopedia.) SOTW by our own SWB is also used in Biblioplan (which covers your younger kidlet). Other books are used, too - these are the main ones. There are also computer cd's you can buy for about $15 from B. that have readings fro the older kids from some out-of-print book, too.

MOH and the Diana Waring materials. If your library is good, DW could be done for not *too* much money. We are currently using MOH Volume 1, but have recently started adding in the DW audios. Mostly I am trying to decide which of these programs will "drive" our history next year.

I was just remembering that while I like History Portfolio http://www.homeschooljourney.com/ I wish I'd done the Brimwood Press 'History Archive Treasury' http://www.brimwoodpress.com/productlist.html for the logic stage - even though we are still chronological, many opportunities come up to fill in other time periods of history, and the Brimwood Press Binder is for all four years!

Everything else that we are doing I love, so that's not a huge deal...

Because I think it would work fine for those ages.....

If doing American, I'd use Hakim's history of us. Older versions are available more inexpensively and many libraries carry them, as well.

If doing world and going back to ancients, I'd look for Kingfisher's History of the Ancient World, which is ancients ONLY (not like the encyclopedia) and written more in a paragraph format. I'm using it, along with the Kinfisher ency. for fifth ancients next year. Any good spine along with library books will work!
