margoargo
Has anybody used 8/7 for a 5th grader? This is where he has placed (after completing ABEKA 4 last year), and 7/6 seems too slow moving for him.
wimseycat
Hi, I think my son (9yo at the time) went from 7/6 to Algebra 1 with Saxon. It is my understanding that Saxon 8/7 and Pre-Algebra are pretty similar so you might be able to jump right to Pre-Algebra. Most people I know either do 8/7 or go right into Pre-Algebra but don't do both. We switched to Teaching Textbooks and my son enjoyed it much more. There isn't as much repetition. Hope this helps, Annika
margoargo
Thanks. It helps a lot. I have heard the same about 8/7 and Algebra 1/2. I think we'll go with the 8/7. I was considering TT as well, but I have a tutor this year who believes strongly in Saxon, so that's what we're doing. What TT level is your son in now? Donna
is nearly halfway through 87. His brother finished 87 in the beginning of his 5th grade year and moved into Alg.
moki4
Our dd did algebra 1/2(Saxon). She is now with TT algebra, and moving very quickly. She will be finished with TT algebra within 4 months (we will skip through some parts which were covered in algebra 1/2) We debated, after finishing algebra 1/2, whether to move straight into algebra 2. But, I don't want her to miss anything. Algebra 1/2 was VERY good. It really incorporates lots of geometry. For us, it was an excellent step into algebra. It is considered a spiral approach, which is why we didn't use Saxon Algebra 1. Our dd got frustrated with all the repitition. She is enjoying TT algebra which is mastery. Anyways, HTH:001_smile:
KinderSafari
My accelerated learner gets bored rather quickly with Saxon with all the repetition, so we just leave out x amount of problems each day (about half). I like the review, and I like the way the new concepts are laid out so well. So that is our compromise.
margoargo
Thanks for all your input. He is now doing 8/7 which will hopefully be more challenging for him than 7/6. I am also supplementing with Singapore to make things a little less routine.
