AggieMama
DD is more enthuastic about afterschooling if we do it everyday as part of our routine. If we miss a few days to a weeks she begins to main about doing any work and rushes through the work that she does. I see major progress when I have th opportunity to work with her 1 on 1 because the school is not meeting her needs academically. She does better in school and performs better when we do afterschooling regularly. Is this normal?
Dmmetler
This makes sense to me. For many years, we homeschooled all year round, every single day we were home. The reason was that DD just plain did better with the consistency, and if we tried to take a break, she didn't handle it well. She was fine going back if the reason we didn't homeschool was that we were out of town, or because we were at church on Sunday, but she needed that routine. I could see afterschooling being the same way-that when it's part of the routine, it simply works better. For that matter, that sounds like me and exercise!
SKL
Yes, that has been my experience as well. Routine is important for us. It takes patience to establish it, but it's worth it.
tm919
Yes, I agree, depending on the child it works. My older daughter thrives on routine. Taking a break is asking for trouble, whining, and troubled whining. Plus, sad to say, many curricula that become popular among homeschool families work best when they are frequent -- e.g., I have a hard time really seeing doing AAS in fits and starts, it works so much better 10-15 minutes a day than once a week.
