Accountability Thread: 2/7-2/13

New thread for the week. :001_smile: Sorry I didn't get this up earlier. I figured somebody would beat me to it.

I've been out of town most of the weekend and just got home. Had an interesting time at continuing education and found a few things out that I need to follow up on. This will be the perfect week to do it.

Schedule:

Math test-done

No school for the rest of the week! (We might have a math worksheet to do daily just to keep our wits sharp.)

I'm a bit depressed.  I've been looking at 9th grade materials and there is no way that dd is going to be able to do many of these classes.  It's not like we haven't been working hard on getting there but what went so smoothly for her brother has just gone in circles for her.  I do have stuff now that is working for her but at a lower level than she really needs to be.  But she is where she is - through no one's fault.  I actually think that she's just slower than the norm in her development.  She's bloomed a lot in the past year or so but she has a lot more blooming to do.

Critterfixer welcome home! You must tell us what you learned at continuing education. I've realized how crucial it is for me to get up early so that's my mission for this week, get up early and workout and then get the boys up. I'm hoping to get to our full line up this week.

Mostly I learned about vomiting, diarrhea and things that make the skin either itch like mad, or fall apart, or both. I found it pretty interesting.

Jean, please don't be depressed, my Ds will start 8th grade next year and he's not where he should be either. This week we finally got him glasses and I think being able to see better will help him some, but I don't think it's going make a difference in his development. Some kids just learn slower than others, I have two that have different learning schedules than everybody else.

Jean, I hear you! My oldest is also working really hard but isn't progressing like I feel she "should" (whatever that means!). For all intents and purposes, with anything language-related, I consider her third grade, rather than fourth. It makes me feel better about where she that way. It's tough because her younger brother is actually in third grade and she's acutely aware of stuff like that, but it helps that he's not flying through things with ease either - though managing to stay on grade level. I guess I just try and focus on "forward progress" and not "grade level". I know you know that, but it bears repeating.

AFM, my in-laws showed up yesterday afternoon, semi-unexpectedly. Or maybe more like last minute notification. So our week long holiday has been extended by a day. They usually leave fairly early on the day they leave, so I may just pick up school as soon as they're gone.

I'm excited because I think we're going to start doing a little reading and math at a coffee shop on Tuesday mornings. There's an awesome book/cafe/yarn shop in town with a lounge area with big tables, armchairs and a chess board. I'm gonna give that a whirl and see how it works for an hour or two. Hoping that's not too much to ask from the two year old? I'll pack her a care kit. Fingers crossed!

Another exciting thing: Just found out that the sewing centre offers sewing classes. Gonna see if they have anything for kids, or even better, would be interested in either a small homeschool class for day time or kids' class for early afternoon on Tuesdays since we're in town anyhow. If all else fails, maybe we could get dd9 private lessons if it wasn't too expensive.

Finally, third exciting thing: Organized homeschool sign language classes on Friday afternoons. It's with a "neighbour" (only a half hour down the road as opposed to an hour all the way to town!) who has raised 18 children of whom 14 use sign language. She's taught a lot of classes, ran day camps etc so I think it should be a ton of fun. We're going Friday afternoons with some homeschooling friends and did is super excited :)

I just found out that I don't have to do state testing this year. Apparently, this repeal went into effect last year (after the testing). There are disadvantages to living under a rock. Nobody tells me anything!

And now the boys are mad, because there goes three days of filling in blanks in the morning with ice cream cones in the afternoon.

Jean,

Count us in the 'not where they should be' camp too.  For us it is reading and math.

For the record, school did not go well for us on Friday.  We canned it because at her horse riding lesson DD got thrown off.  She did really well after the fact, but it obviously affected her most of the day.

Maybe this week will be better.

That's always a weird experience. I often have a period of trepidation around certain animals after I've been bitten. I took a bad bite from a terrier once and I swear that I was a little nervous around all terriers for a few weeks after that.

Well, I guess we're actually going to do a bit of school. It's a long weekend here in BC so the IL's want to get on the road bright an early to beat the worst of the traffic. So maybe we won't do our breakfast morning time reading and spelling, but we'll tackle math and LA after they leave at the very least, then on to history, science and typing/cursive this afternoon.

How many melt downs do we predict? And who? The toddler? The 9yo (going on 15)? Or me? :P. If I'm expecting them I can deal with them better lol!

Today I think dd9 and I will tackle what's left of MM division chapter. We started it last fall when it became apparent that we really needed to work on multiplication and then we just kind of went crazy with that up to multi-digit multiplication and we never did get back to division, though I think it will be fairly straightforward for her now that her multiplication is practically mastered. I've ordered her a full year of CLE 400 though I don't have a solid plan for it yet. Should she start at the beginning and accelerate through stuff she knows? Start in 406 or 407 and back track as needed? I'll wait until it arrives I guess, and in the meantime there are a few pages from ds8's CLE 300 I could photocopy since I know from previews that there are a few things she's not familiar with even in the very first booklet.

Happy Monday everyone :)

Critter- I was up at 7:30 Sunday morning checking in on the boards while the house was quiet and I didn't want to wake anyone. I thought "I beat Critter!" But I was too chicken to start the thread. ;)

Hugs to all of you with struggling learners. I tip my hat to each of you for your patience and perseverance in educating your children. I was that kid in math and I really slipped through the cracks in the PS system. It would have been nice to have a parent right there with me, trying things to find a good fit and advocating for me. Your kids will appreciate your efforts when they hit their late 20's (cough, early 30's, cough). ;)

It's snowing here today and I've got a fridge full of chicken to cook for freezer meals and broth so I am calling it a snow day! The kids got these really cool art books this weekend that gives prompts and ideas. Today is a good day for those, I think.

Have a great day everyone!

Checking in late. After some thought I decided we will be breaking next week. I had planned to do 2 sessions of school w/ a 2 wk break in between further thought is that this is not the best idea.

Anyway- today has went well enough here.

Ds keeps going on and on about how well he likes the schedule. I'm glad to have him excited and motivated to do school.

Anyway, we are finishing up our study of India this week, really, this time. Still contemplating our next country- I thought we would do Italy but now I'm not sure- maybe we'll do Italy, I got some books from the library but the selection was pretty sparse. I need to do some searching for titles while on break.

Daughters have finished their work, ds needs to finish up his last problem of math and I'm going to do some RA time(lit and a book about Cobras related to our India study).

(hugs)

I was thinking about this the other day, ds isn't affected as most but has some areas of struggle. We've consistently work away. I feel sometimes that I should push more and sometimes I've let that drive me to push more than I should. It is a hard sometimes, even when we know that we need to just work where they are at the pressure is still there, and the worry. Progress only comes so quickly, regardless of how much or what type of work you do.

hmm...school derail this morning.  DH locked himself out of his vehicle, so we had to suspend school to rescue him.  Never could find the keys, so we still had to spend $40 to get it unlocked.  We'll salvage the day with at least math after gymnastics, so DD can get some of the hyper out.

I didn't plan on doing any school today. However, the boys did a math worksheet on fractions (practice makes perfect!) and I have listened to their current fiction projects (Lost in the Dark Forest, The Ice Flat Adventures) and researched French, Logic and made a dent in Writing.

So far I've decided that for Logic next year we will start Art of Argument, and when we finish Ecoutez, Parlez this summer we will go to CAP French. I found a nice collection of essays for the boys to enjoy as a prelude to essay writing. They are funny, enjoyable and make the point that I want to make at the outset of essay writing: essays are fun to read and write. I'm probably going to spend another year playing with CW Homer for the boys while working with some of the essay prompts that are in the book (Breakfast on Mars). Should be really fun.

Today's our first of two weeks off.

We did have to finish off the science experiment from last week.  Done!

The kids wrote thank you notes for birthday gifts.  Done - only two left for each to do.

DD helped cook dinner.  Done!

Piano/guitar practice and lessons.  Done!

Overall we are all more relaxed and rested after just one day of break.

Looking forward to tomorrow when we take a trip to a different city to go to a water park we've never been to.  That's our Phys Ed for the day!  And then we'll finish off the thank you cards and play some board games.

Yesterday went pretty well. School covered geometry, ELTL, spelling, handwriting, and history, and DD did most of it without fussing. I rhinestoned DD's new-old competition leotard and probably lost a few brain cells in the process (that epoxy smells HORRIBLE! H.O.R.R.I.B.L.E.! So disgusting.) I'm still trying to get the smell out of the school room. But her leo looks pretty now, and that's what's important, right? (Actually, it is important enough to affect her performance - she does exponentially better on her passes if she feels pretty.) I ordered some more rhinestones to finish the last of it, but I think I'll wait for a nice day and just do the work outside, if I can. Did I mention that glue smells horrible?

Monday - no school today because one of dd's homeschooled teen friends came over for the day.

I did talk to my sister (a former elementary school teacher who also homeschooled her kids and then her granddaughter for a time) and we played the "I"m not an idiot" game.  The way you play is that I express my frustration with dd's schooling and my sister tells me how to teach her. . . in the exact ways that I've already tried.  It's ok.  I'm not mad at my sister  I would have suggested the very same things.  I didn't actually say "I"m not an idiot" out loud either - I just thought it!

Surprisingly, math after gym went exceedingly well.  This time I gave DD the problem and told her to tell me what she did.  She had the option to use c-rods or abacus as a visual aide.  She had a great time being the sassy smart alek.  She did a lot of problems doing that.

Today's plan:  swimming (long drive to get there/back)

have kids finish writing thank you notes and actually mail them

harass library about SOTW 3 (reserved it 6 months ago - they have 2 copies, both in 'mending' - when I called yesterday to inquire they said 'hmm, let us look into that for you')

plan some more for Science in our next rotation (starting Quark Chronicles - very excited) and History (using American Girls and associated books/crafts/documentaries)

After our math lesson this morning I jumped on Amazon and ordered a Judy clock. Sigh. My encouraging day last week was short lived. I am hoping that the Judy clock rotating the hour hand as you move the minute hand will help her visualize it better. If we are still getting nowhere by Friday, I'll put all away for a while... again. :(

Reading, science and piano are also done. Everyone was up early this morning and now we are reaping the benefits. Later, we'll have some snuggle time for history reading and we need to fit in LA among early baths and early dinner before we leave the house this evening.

Oh, and even with yesterday's snow day I still got to record reading, geography, science and piano! All from things they were doing on their own! I think there have been other days off that were similar, I just wasn't listening for those educational things I could record.

Stuff done.

I'm feeling a bit more tight lipped these days, probably good for me.

Ha.

I forgot to mention that ds has started the Greenleaf Guide to Famous Men of Middle Ages. Today he made a made a salt dough map of Ancient Greece. At first he was like I don't want to do that but then he got into it. I wasn't going to make him do it, as I don't see the necessity of making it to a big project but he enjoyed it, so that works for me. Math was exceptionally good to day, we did it side by side.

Dd1 had a decent day, minimal whining :) Dd2 did her work ok BUT dd1 starting painting and she was anxious to join in but we had fun with a reading "game" in LoE.

We went up to the in-laws for our morning walk. The girls wanted to show granny their sewing work, dd3 had a drawing to give her.

Lunch break now and then poetry time.

Flew from DK to North Carolina yesterday. Three planes and 18 hours door-to-door, but there were no delays or lost bags or anything else worth grumbling about.

DS had to get for his online Latin class this morning, and he did a math lesson. Otherwise, it is a recovery day. It seems so weird to have Latin at 9 a.m. instead of 3 p.m.

We are both so happy to be with DS24!!!!!

Frustrating day today.  I really needed a nap/quiet time to reset my mood while the toddler was amenable to quiet time right after his program.  But no, DD8 has a super case of the whines and complains.  After being interrupted no less than 6 times (each accompanied by the slamming of doors) I finally just got up so I could enforce her quiet time in her room instead of outside.  But it hasn't done anything for my mood.

We left Chick-Fil-A early because she was so busy being bossy and a tattle tale that she wasn't actually playing and I was tired of the whines and complains.  On the way home we had a discussion about minding your own business.  I even pointed out that when one of the other kids went to their parent because she was being such a spaz about it they got the same response as DD did from me....mind your own business.  The problem is, the girl wasn't really doing anything wrong, DD just didn't want her doing it because DH and I have told her not to do a specific thing there.

ARGH....

Tuesday:

We had school at the library today.  While decluttering in the Schoolroom of Doom, yesterday, I came across an unused workbook on outlining.  It is at an elementary level but we're going to go quickly through it.  We went through one chunk today.  Because I was at the library and couldn't get distracted by my messy house, I got some much needed grading done and worked on my own Khan academy work so that I can better help dd in her math.

I think I'll organize my planning notes today and create my price list. I've got a little housekeeping. I'm also getting my hair done today.

Aside from that I think I'll do some writing. Currently I'm trying to decide if I want a fire today or not.

I love a week off in February! Back to work next week, though.

That's it!!!! We are for sure taking a week off next February! With random days off here and there, we might as well have taken a week off and enjoyed a bigger chunk of time off without the guilt! Why didn't you guys tell me this is why you are all taking off? :D

Slow moving this morning. Its freezing cold and I just want to huddle under a blanket and read. I sent the kids to their room and told them to set the timer on the tablet for 15 minutes and clean. Then 15 minutes to play, and so on. They did a good job and I got to drag my feet for the moning which of course, I am now regretting.

Dd is doing science now. I am off to start some laundry, fix lunch and tackle the rest of our school work.

So cute, I have to share: dd wrote a story yesterday complete with illustrations that included what happened "latr" and "latr r" and ended with her coming to tell me some shocking news while I was doing dishes. (I am always doing dishes in her stories... hmmm...) In the story I was so shocked, I broke all the dishes AND the sink, causing a huge flood in our house. :) Probably only funny to me since she's mine but nonetheless, there you go!

My February break is my favorite. I like a fall break in early October as well. Typically we don't take many individual days off because I like these extended breaks so much.

I tallied my lists up. 1,315 $ and change for two boys for about a year and a half of materials. Because you know I have to have the pretty poster of the periodic table and two books with illustrations of the elements and the gigantic chemistry set.

Well, yesterday went well but the two hours of swimming exhausted us all!

Another day off but still things to do:

piano/guitar practice

actually mail thank you cards (they are written/addressed...)

DS and I will bake some bread

DS and I will work on his Lego project

DD off to grandparents for bonding time  (particularly important as DF's mother died unexpectedly this past weekend, so there is more awareness of doing the things you want to do/maintaining relationships NOW, not in the future)

volunteering at local food bank in evening

That makes me feel better about my tally, well my tally so far anyway. I'm not 100% decided on everything yet. I like to sit on it a bit before buying- well some things anyway. I already bought Cover Story for ds because I found it used I still have to get the student books though. I have a chunk of stuff already too- like Math and LA for the girls. I plan on using the library pretty heavy for content. I'm fairly decided on math for ds BUT also trying to be patient in case we hit a snag.

Kids worked hard this am and got a chunk done, on lunch break now and will be finishing everything up soon.

Ds and dd2 got in their new handwriting books and dd3 got in her preschool book(hopefully she stays out of her sisters books now)

We have to work early tomorrow too as we have a our annual V-Day party tomorrow afternoon but tomorrow afternoon is free in case we don't get it all done(although I've already told them they will need to hit it as soon as they get up).

Wow!! I feel better about my tally as well, but it sounds like you're going to have a very exciting year and imo that's priceless! The last few days have glorious and horrible all at the same time. We've gotten up late everyday this week, but have still managed to get work done. Math has been the best this week youngest and I have enjoyed working on the whiteboard. Today he took a test and made a 100 and he hardly needed to use the rods at all. I forgot to mention how much we're enjoying using the C-rods! The older boy also had is first chapter test today and he made a 95!!! He is so happy and so am I! I decided to hold off until Friday for his Latin exam, it's gonna be a doozy and I want to review some more with him. Im not feeling well today so we had to stop early so that I could rest if we're going to make it to church tonight. I did get a bit of bad news this week, I won't post about it right now because it makes me cry a lot.

Everything done for today, very well too.  DD about had a meltdown in the middle of school.  She was in tears over the fact that I was asking her to do math when "her med was wearing off".  She did it just fine though.

Wednesday - 15 minutes before the "official" start of school, when I was still in my pj's and desperately needing a shower, dd asked if we could do school at the library again.  I took the world's quickest shower (ok - probably not but still, a quick one), threw on my clothes, quick gathered up books and my laptop and got in the car with her.  We got to the very close library 15 minutes after school normally starts.

We had a nice school time there.  The special room you can reserve was full, so we just set up in the main library area.  Dd did her stuff and I did Khan academy and some grading.  The nice thing about school there is that I can't be distracted by housework.  Today was science emphasis day on our block schedule.  She had a couple of YouTubes to go with her textbook reading.  We worked together on some things in her vocabulary book - especially analogies, which so far has been really difficult for her.  She finished up vocabulary and Spanish later at home.

Ds has finished Tender is the Night by F. Scott Fitzgerald.  We started the Teaching Company lectures on the book.

I got out the red pen, took it to the list and got it down to $750. That includes the chemistry set I want and a few more expensive items that are both functional and beautiful. It's not entirely truthful, because it that total simply delays spending on additional French and Math until the winter quarter when it is needed. Still, improvement has been made.

Today I have some cooking, a little housekeeping, writing and a library trip to get to. What a nice break I've had! Can't wait to do this again in late March.

We are having an epidemic of whining.

The house looks like a bomb went off.

Ds started at 6:30 am.

I want a fresh start.

My focus and mood are NOT good.

I made our dessert to share still need to make a main dish.

I'm thinking of having dd skip sewing tomorrow, she has not made any yo-yo's(which is for her task this week), she has tried a few times but this seemingly simple task is tripping us up. And it would make my life easier.

Ds is finishing up his Greek Study, getting ready to read our Gandhi book(our last India book finally arrived to the library!). I also want to do our nature study this am as I know I won't feel like it this evening and if dd does sewing the chance is little that it will get done then. We keep going outside but not sketching. Anyway, not sure what is realistic. It looks like ds will be likely pushing math and writing until tomorrow as I don't see it happening today.

My goal is to survive today.

Lots of appointments and activities--speech for ds10 and dd7, therapist appt. for Ds 10, tumbling, gymnastics, and dance classes.

Messy house, kids to feed, library books to return, stuff to mail. We'll try to fit some schoolwork and music practice in, but it probably won't amount to much.

I have a cold.

Blah. Super un-motivated today. Would way rather just curl up with a good book. Unfortunately, even when planned, that never turns out like I'd like it to: Kids fighting, house falling down around my ears, supper looming and no plan and I feel a little gross from sitting around all day.

So.

I guess I need to do what we need to do:

Math block

LA Block

(Grammar, phonics w/two older kids and independent reading, spelling with the youngest, writing, memory work and Read Aloud)

Then, after lunch, outside play and quiet time, some science, typing or cursive and piano practice. Will do history if I don't procrastinate the start of school in the afternoon lol

Looks like I'm also taking an impromptu business-ish trip to the lower mainland with Dh, so leaving tomorrow afternoon. Need to do laundry!
